Safety also depends on how products are used and maintained at home. Some mascaras contain ingredients that break down to produce formaldehyde, which helps prevent bacterial growth. If a tube of mascara is old, it may stop producing this ingredient, allowing bacteria to grow. For this reason, experts often suggest replacing mascara every few months. Understanding these ingredients helps us see how chemistry, history, and biology all meet in the products we use every day.
