Epic Sanskrit literature is represented by the Mahabharata, written by Ved Vyasa, and the Ramayana, written by Valmiki. These are considered the greatest Sanskrit epics. The medieval period brought significant shifts through the Bhakti movement. This was a religious movement in medieval Hinduism that focused on personal devotion. It originated in Tamilakam during the 6th century CE. The movement spread northwards through the teachings of the Alvars and Nayanars. By the 15th to 17th centuries, it reached its zenith. This movement caused a drastic change in literary traditions from the 14th to the 18th centuries. It led to the rise of devotional poets such as Kabīr, Tulsīdās, and Guru Nānak. Modern Indian literature continues to be shaped by these ancient and medieval roots. Writers like Suresh Joshi, known as the father of modern Gujarati literature, have shaped contemporary styles.
