The name Illuminati refers to several different groups. Some of these groups were real, while others are just made up for stories. Most people use the name to talk about a secret society from the past. This group was active during a time called the Enlightenment. They wanted to change how society worked. Their main goals were to fight superstition and religious influence in public life. They also wanted to stop leaders from using their power unfairly.

To reach these goals, the group used a very organized system. They had different ranks or grades for their members. One of these levels was called the Minerval. Members of this grade had to learn secret signs and passwords. They even used fake names to keep their identities private. For example, the founder used the name Spartacus. The group also had a special symbol. They used an image of the Owl of Minerva to represent their order.

A man named Adam Weishaupt started the group in Bavaria. He was a professor at the University of Ingolstadt in 1773. He wanted to spread new ideas about education and freedom. On May 1, 1776, Weishaupt and four students formed the first group. At first, they called themselves the Perfectibilists. Later, in April 1778, they changed the name to the Order of Illuminati. The group grew as more people joined. By the end of summer 1778, they had 27 members.

The group grew much faster when a man named Adolph Knigge joined. He was a very talented recruiter. He joined in late 1780 and brought many new people with him. Knigge helped the group connect with other groups called Freemasons. This helped the Illuminati spread their ideas to more people. However, the group faced big problems with the law. Between 1784 and 1790, the ruler Charles Theodore outlawed the society. He did this with help from the Catholic Church.

The term Illuminati refers to several different groups, both real and fictional. Historically, the name most often describes the Bavarian Illuminati. This was a secret society formed during the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment was a period of new ideas about science and reason. The group had specific goals to improve society. They wanted to oppose superstition and religious influence in public life. They also fought against the abuse of power by monarchs. Their statutes stated they wanted to stop injustice without dominating others.

Adam Weishaupt founded the society on May 1, 1776. He was a professor of law at the University of Ingolstadt in Bavaria. At that time, the university was run by the Jesuits. The Jesuits were a religious order that held much power. Weishaupt was the only professor not belonging to a religious order. He often clashed with the Jesuits over liberal ideas. Because of these conflicts, he became deeply anti-clerical. He wanted to spread Enlightenment ideals through a secret group of like-minded people.

Weishaupt found Freemasonry too expensive and not open to his specific ideas. Therefore, he created his own system with different ranks. He originally called his group the Covenant of Perfectibility. On May 1, 1776, Weishaupt and four students formed this group. They used the Owl of Minerva as their symbol. Members used aliases to hide their true identities. Weishaupt himself used the name Spartacus. His students used names like Ajax, Agathon, Tiberius, and Erasmus. In April 1778, the group became known as the Order of Illuminati.

The organization grew through a very strict and organized structure. It used a system of ranks called grades. The first three grades were Novice, Minerval, and Illuminated Minerval. The Minerval grade involved complicated ceremonies. During these rituals, candidates learned secret signs and passwords. The group also used a system of mutual espionage. This allowed Weishaupt to monitor the character of all members. He chose favorites to join a ruling council called the Areopagus. They sought out wealthy and educated men between the ages of 18 and 30.

Growth increased significantly when Adolph Knigge joined in late 1780. Knigge was a very effective recruiter with many connections. He was already a high-ranking member of a different group called the Freemasons. Knigge brought his own plans to reform the order. He helped the Illuminati connect with Masonic lodges. This allowed the group to spread more quickly. However, Weishaupt faced internal challenges with Knigge. In January 1781, Weishaupt had to admit that some of the higher secrets were not real. He confessed that the higher degrees had not yet been written.

The group eventually faced heavy opposition from the government. Between 1784 and 1790, the Elector of Bavaria, Charles Theodore, outlawed the society. He did this with the encouragement of the Catholic Church. These edicts ended the legal existence of the Bavarian Illuminati. Despite this, critics claimed the group continued to work in secret. Some even blamed the group for the French Revolution. Many people believed the Illuminati were still operating underground to influence world events.

Today, the name Illuminati is central to many conspiracy theories. These theories suggest the group still exists in the shadows. They claim the Illuminati control world affairs and governments. They are often depicted as masterminding events to create a New World Order. These ideas have become very popular in modern culture. You can find mentions of the Illuminati in many novels, films, and video games. Some people even look for symbols of the group in everyday objects.
