Recent investigations have also looked into his identity and travels. In 2022, reports from Bellingcat and The Insider suggested he used a Russian internal passport under a different name. They claimed this passport was issued by the GRU, which is Russia's military intelligence agency. The investigators noted the passport number matched a batch of fake documents used by spies. Plotnitsky responded to these claims by saying he did not remember his 2014 travels. He maintained that he always used a passport in his own name.
