The name of the city has changed many times. In classical antiquity, it was known as Smyrna. This name was used in English until around 1930. At that time, the government worked to phase out Greek names. They replaced them with Turkish names. The modern name İzmir is the Turkish version of Smyrna. Some people believe the name comes from an Amazon named Smyrna. Others link it to the Myrrha commifera shrub. This plant produces myrrh, an aromatic resin. The city exported this resin in ancient times. In the Ottoman period, the name was written as Izmīr. After Turkey adopted the Latin alphabet in 1928, the spelling changed.
Ancient settlements moved as the landscape changed. The first group to control the whole Gulf of İzmir lived on Mount Yamanlar. Later, a core settlement called "Old Smyrna" formed. This was located in the Bayraklı area. It sat on a hill that was once a small peninsula. This settlement may date back to the 3rd millennium BC. In the 13th century BC, the Bronze Age collapsed. Invasions from the Balkans, called the Sea Peoples, caused great change. Later, the city became a Greek settlement. Pottery from 1000 BC proves people lived there. The oldest preserved ruins date to 725–700 BC.
Old Smyrna was a complex urban center. It used the Hippodamian system for its streets. This means streets run north–south and east–west. They intersect at right angles. This was a very early example of this pattern in a western city. Most houses faced south. The oldest house in Bayraklı dates to around 900 BC. It had one room with sun-dried brick walls. A larger house from the 7th century BC had five rooms. It even had a courtyard. This was the oldest known house with so many rooms. The city was also a place of religion. The Temple of Athena was its most important sanctuary. It dates from 640 to 580 BC.
Many powerful empires fought for control of the city. The Lydians conquered the city around 610–600 BC. The Persian Empire later invaded the region. The Persian emperor Cyrus the Great attacked coastal cities. This resulted in the destruction of Old Smyrna in 545 BC. Later, Alexander the Great re-founded the city. He did this around 340 BC. He moved the city to a new location. This new site was beyond the Meles River. He chose the slopes of Mount Pagos. This area is known today as Kadifekale.
