Hydrothermal vents are cracks on the ocean floor that release hot water. These vents are found near volcanic areas or where tectonic plates move apart. They happen because the Earth is geologically active and has much water. The hot water carries many dissolved minerals from the Earth's crust.

First, seawater is drawn into the crust through faults or porous rocks. This water gets close to hot magma and heats up deeply. The water becomes very hot and picks up minerals from the crust. Because hot water is less dense, it rises back up toward the seafloor.

They found them on the East Pacific Rise during the RISE Project. A team from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography used a vehicle named ALVIN.

This special machine helped them see the vents in the deep ocean. Later, scientists found more vents like Loki's Castle in 2008. These were found at 73°N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The world's deepest black smokers are in the Cayman Trough.

Hydrothermal vents are fissures on the seabed that discharge geothermally heated water. These vents are essential to the Earth's systems. They help control the global marine biogeochemistry by delivering various elements to the oceans. They are most common near volcanically active areas. You can find them at mid-ocean ridges where tectonic plates move apart. They also appear near ocean basins and hotspots.

The process of a vent working involves a complex cycle of water and heat.

First, seawater is drawn into the hydrothermal system through faults or porous sediments. This water moves close to a volcanic edifice or upwelling magma. The magma heats the water to extreme temperatures. This superheated water becomes rich in dissolved minerals from the Earth's crust. Because this hot fluid is less dense than the surrounding cold seawater, it rises.

When the fluid hits the near-freezing ocean water, minerals precipitate out. This precipitation builds the physical structures of the vents over time.

There are two primary types of chimneys: black smokers and white smokers.

Black smokers are often found in the bathyal zone. They emit dark clouds containing high levels of sulfur-bearing minerals, or sulfides. These chimneys can grow quite large. For example, a structure named "Godzilla" near Oregon reached 61 meters in height.

White smokers emit lighter-hued minerals like barium, calcium, and silicon. These vents usually have lower-temperature plumes. This is often because they are further from the main heat source. White smokers may represent the waning stages of a hydrothermal field. As magma crystallizes, the heat source moves further away.

Some vents reach extreme physical states called supercritical conditions.

At great depths, high hydrostatic pressure changes how water behaves. When water reaches its critical point, it becomes a supercritical fluid. This fluid has physical properties between a gas and a liquid. The critical point for pure water is 218 atmospheres. However, adding salt changes this. For seawater with 3.2 wt. % NaCl, the critical point is 407°C and 298.5 bars. The Beebe vent site in the Cayman Trough is the world's deepest known site. It sits at approximately 5,000 meters below sea level. It has shown sustained supercritical venting at 417°C.

Scientists first discovered these amazing structures in 1979.

Most of the deep ocean is not very productive. However, vent areas host complex communities. These communities are fueled by chemicals in the vent fluids. Chemosynthetic bacteria and archaea form the base of the food chain. They use these chemicals to create energy. This supports diverse animals like giant tube worms, clams, and limpets.

Some evidence suggests alkaline vents are especially good for making organic molecules. These ideas also extend into space exploration. Scientists believe active vents might exist on Jupiter's moon Europa. They also think they might exist on Saturn's moon Enceladus. Some even speculate that ancient vents once existed on Mars.
