When relative humidity reaches 100%, the air is said to be saturated. This state is known as the dew point. Specific humidity is the ratio of the mass of water vapor to the total mass of the entire air parcel. It is very similar to the mixing ratio, which compares the mass of water vapor to the mass of dry air in the same parcel.

Humidity has a direct impact on living things, especially regarding how they regulate temperature. Many animals, including humans, rely on perspiration, or sweating, to stay cool. When humidity is high, it reduces the rate of moisture evaporation from skin surfaces. This makes heat exchange much less efficient.
