Humidity has a direct impact on living things, especially regarding how they regulate temperature. Many animals, including humans, rely on perspiration, or sweating, to stay cool. When humidity is high, it reduces the rate of moisture evaporation from skin surfaces. This makes heat exchange much less efficient. 

Scientists use many specialized tools to measure these levels. A hygrometer or a psychrometer is used to measure humidity, while a humidistat acts as a switch to control devices like humidifiers.
