In the past, this work was called personnel administration. In 1900, a company called National Cash Register Co. started a personnel department. It helped with safety and new laws. Later, companies like Ford found that good management helped. In 1914, Ford workers saw their pay go from $2.50 to $5.00 a day.

Today, HR does many jobs. They find and hire new people. They also handle payroll, which is the way workers get paid. They make sure people get benefits, like sick time. HR also helps workers get along. They work to make the workplace fair and safe.

Some people think the name "human resources" is not good. They say people are not just tools or things to use. Because of this, some companies use new names. They might call the group "People Operations" or a "Culture Department." These names focus more on the people themselves.

Human resources, often called HR, refers to the people who make up a workforce. This includes everyone working in a business, a whole industry, or even an entire economy. Sometimes, people use a smaller term called human capital. This refers to the special knowledge and skills that each person has.

There is also an HR department in many companies. This group acts as a bridge between the bosses and the employees. They help make sure the workplace is a good place to be.

An HR department has many important jobs to do every day. They help find new people to hire by posting job ads and conducting interviews. They also manage payroll, which is the system for paying workers. This includes tracking vacation time and sick days for everyone. HR managers also look after employee benefits and help solve problems between workers. They work hard to make sure the company follows all labor laws. Their goal is to create a better environment for everyone to work.

This field has changed a lot over many years. In the early 1900s, it was known as personnel administration. The National Cash Register Co. started a personnel department in 1900. Their owner, John Henry Patterson, created it to handle safety and new laws. Another famous example is the Ford company. In 1913, Ford had a very high turnover rate. However, in 1914, they doubled their workers' daily pay from $2.50 to $5.00. This change helped make the workers much happier.

As time went on, the work became even more important. During the 1970s, businesses faced new challenges from global competition and new technology. This forced companies to use strategic planning to prepare for the future. Many universities eventually began teaching human resource management as a special subject. A man named Elton Mayo is often called the Father of Human Relations. He studied how people feel at work. He found that communication and cooperation are often more important than physical things like lighting.

Today, some people have different ideas about the name "human resources." Some critics feel the name makes people sound like objects or tools. They believe humans are creative beings, not just resources to be used. Because of this, some modern companies use new names for their HR teams. They might call them "People Operations" or a "Culture Department." This helps focus on the actual people in the office. Other groups, like the International Labour Organization, remind us that labor is not a commodity. They want to ensure workers are treated with dignity.

Human resources (HR) refers to the collective workforce within an organization, industry, or economy. While the term describes the people themselves, a related concept is human capital. Human capital specifically refers to the individual knowledge and skills held by workers. In many businesses, "human resources" also describes a specific department. This department performs human resource management to oversee employment. They act as a vital link between a company's management and its employees.

HR departments handle many complex administrative tasks. They manage the recruitment and selection process by posting job advertisements and organizing resumes. Managers schedule interviews and ensure that necessary background checks are completed. Once employees are hired, HR handles payroll and benefits administration. This involves reviewing payroll, approving invoices, and managing vacation or sick time. They also maintain employee files with required documents for future reference. Additionally, they coordinate employee relations, which can include providing employee counseling.

Modern human resource management can be viewed through two different lenses. The first is a traditional or modern definition focused on structured processes. This version covers hiring, firing, pay, perks, and performance management. It is similar to what personnel managers did in the early 20th century. The second definition uses a macromanagement perspective. This approach views management through the lens of the entire marketplace, including customers and competitors. This method seeks to make the employment relationship fulfilling for both the workers and the management.

Historically, this field was known as personnel administration. In the 1920s, the focus was mainly on hiring, evaluating, and paying staff. There was little focus on systematic relationships or organizational performance. The first personnel management department was established at the National Cash Register Co. in 1900. The owner, John Henry Patterson, created it to manage safety and grievances after several strikes. Another major example is the Ford Motor Company. In 1913, Ford faced a turnover ratio of 380 percent. By 1914, the company doubled daily wages from $2.50 to $5.00 to improve satisfaction.

As the world changed, so did the role of HR. During the 1970s, businesses faced intense competition from globalization and technological shifts. This forced companies to adopt strategic planning to predict future environmental changes. This era helped move HR toward a more proactive role in organizational effectiveness. Elton Mayo, known as the Father of Human Relations, contributed greatly to this shift. His studies showed that human factors are often more important than physical conditions. He found that employees value communication, cooperation, and involvement more than factors like lighting.

Today, HR professionals must consider many variables when planning for the future. These factors include organizational structure, business location, and demographic changes. They must also account for environmental uncertainties and company expansion. Managers use HR software to improve efficiency and track various metrics. Some organizations even use a third-party service called an Employer of Record (EOR). An EOR acts as the official employer for staff in foreign countries. This helps companies follow local laws without needing to build a full legal entity in every new location.

Despite its importance, the term "human resources" faces significant criticism. Some scholars argue that calling people "resources" treats them like commodities or objects. They believe humans are creative, social beings rather than mere tools for production. In response, many modern companies have rebranded their departments. They now use terms like "People Operations," "Employee Success," or "Culture Department." The International Labour Organization even promoted the principle that "Labour is not a commodity." This movement aims to ensure that workers are treated with dignity rather than as assets to be used.
