De Vries was born on February 16, 1848. His father, Gerrit de Vries, was a lawyer and served as the Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 1872 to 1874. His mother, Maria Everardina Reuvens, was the daughter of an archaeology professor. Growing up in Haarlem and The Hague, Hugo showed an early passion for botany. He won several prizes for his herbariums while attending school. In 1866, he enrolled at Leiden University to major in botany. He was deeply inspired by Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution during his studies.
After graduating in 1870, de Vries pursued advanced scientific training. He studied chemistry and physics at Heidelberg University. He also worked in the laboratories of Wilhelm Hofmeister and Julius Sachs. These experiences focused his interest on experimental botany and plant growth. By 1875, he accepted a professorship at the Royal Agricultural College in Berlin. However, he eventually moved to the University of Amsterdam. He became a full professor there in 1881. From 1885 to 1918, he directed the Amsterdam Botanical Institute and Garden.
In 1889, de Vries proposed a new way to understand inheritance. He published a book titled *Intracellular Pangenesis*. In this work, he suggested that specific traits are carried by tiny particles. He called these units "pangenes." This idea was a major step toward the modern understanding of genes. Later, a scientist named Wilhelm Johannsen shortened the term to "genes." To prove his theory, de Vries hybridized many plant species during the 1890s. He observed how traits like dominance and recessiveness worked in different generations.
During these experiments, de Vries rediscovered the laws of heredity. He used principles like segregation and independent assortment to explain his results. Interestingly, he did this while unaware of Gregor Mendel’s earlier work. When he finally learned about Mendel in the late 1890s, he adjusted his terminology. Although he initially neglected to credit Mendel in a 1900 publication, he later conceded Mendel's priority. Because of this, de Vries, Carl Correns, and Erich von Tschermak are often credited with the rediscovery of Mendelian laws.
De Vries is also famous for his work on mutation theory. 
While his idea of "sudden leaps" in evolution was eventually replaced, his core concept was vital. We now know that mutations are discrete changes in a DNA sequence. The large-scale changes he saw in primroses were actually caused by chromosomal abnormalities. These include things like polyploidy, which is the duplication of chromosomes. Despite this, his work inspired many scientists, including Thomas Hunt Morgan. His ideas about mutations also became a popular theme in science fiction, such as the *X-Men* stories.
De Vries received many prestigious honors throughout his long career. He was elected to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1878. He also joined the American Philosophical Society in 1903 and the United States National Academy of Sciences in 1904. He won the Darwin Medal in 1906 and the Linnean Medal in 1929. After retiring in 1918, he lived at his estate, De Boeckhorst, in Lunteren. He continued to study his experimental gardens until he passed away on May 21, 1935.
