The Hudson River is a big river.

The Hudson River is a large river in New York.

The river is very special because of the tides. Tides are the rise and fall of the sea. In the lower part of the river, the water changes direction with the tides. This part is called a tidal estuary. Long ago, glaciers carved out a deep path for the water. This path is called a fjord.
Many people have lived near this river for a long time. Groups like the Mohican and Lenape people called it home. Later, it was named after Henry Hudson. He was an explorer who sailed there in 1609. The river has also inspired many artists. They loved to paint its beautiful views. Today, people work hard to keep the water clean. This helps fish, like sturgeon, live in the river again.
The Hudson River is a huge and important waterway in New York.

The river works in a very interesting way because of the tides. In the lower half, the river is a tidal estuary. This means the ocean water moves in and out with the tides. Even far north in the city of Troy, the water changes direction.

Many different groups of people have called this river home. The Munsee, Lenape, Mohican, Mohawk, and Haudenosaunee lived in these lands.

History shows how much people used the river for travel and trade. The Dutch called it the North River. They built settlements all around it. Later, the Erie Canal was finished in 1825.
The river has also inspired many famous people and ideas. Writers like Washington Irving wrote about the river valley. In the nineteenth century, artists formed the Hudson River School. They painted beautiful landscapes of the area.

The Hudson River is a major waterway in the United States.

The river functions as a unique tidal estuary in its lower half. An estuary is where freshwater meets the sea. In this case, the river is actually deeper than the ocean it enters. This deep channel is known as the Hudson Fjord. North American glaciers carved this path long ago. The tidal influence is very strong in this region. Even as far north as Troy, the river changes direction with the tides.
Many Indigenous groups have called this river home for centuries. These include the Munsee, Lenape, Mohican, Mohawk, and Haudenosaunee. Each group had its own name for the water. The Mohicans called it Mahicannittuk. The Lenape called it Muhheakantuck.

The Dutch settlers had different names for the local waterways. They called the Hudson the North River, or Noortrivier. They called the Delaware River the South River. This river system was the spine of the New Netherland colony. Because the river was a gateway to the interior, it was very strategic. This led to competition between the English and the Dutch. Control over the river meant control over trade.
In the nineteenth century, the river became a hub for transport. The Delaware and Hudson Canal connected Port Jervis to Kingston. This allowed coal from Pennsylvania to reach New York. Another major project was the Erie Canal. It was completed in 1825. This canal linked Albany on the Hudson to Buffalo on Lake Erie.
The river has also shaped American culture and art. The river valley inspired the writer Washington Irving. In the 1800s, the Hudson River School of landscape painting began. These artists used a pastoral style to paint the landscape.

In the modern era, the river faces environmental challenges. Industrial pollution grew sharply in the mid-twentieth century. One major problem was polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs. These are man-made chemicals that can harm the water.
