Honiara is the capital and largest city of the Solomon Islands.

The geography of Honiara includes several important water features and transport routes. The Matanikau River flows through the town and past Chinatown. To the west of the city center are the suburbs of Tanaghai and White River. The city revolves around the Kukum Highway. This major road connects the town to the Honiara International Airport.
Honiara has a tropical rainforest climate, often called an Af climate. This means the weather is generally warm and wet. The city is subject to monsoons. Most of the rainfall occurs between November and April. The average annual precipitation is about 2,300 mm. This is actually lower than the average for the rest of the Solomon Islands. On February 1, 2010, the city recorded a temperature of 36.4°C. This was the highest temperature ever recorded in the Solomon Islands.
The history of the area is deeply connected to World War II.
In recent decades, Honiara has experienced significant political and ethnic unrest. Since the late 1990s, the city has faced periods of violence. A coup attempt in June 2000 led to fighting between two groups. These were the Malaita Eagle Force and the Isatabu Freedom Movement. Although a peace agreement was signed in October 2000, violence continued. In March 2002, two New Zealand diplomats were murdered in the streets.
Political unrest also caused physical damage to the city's commercial areas. In 2006, riots broke out following the election of Snyder Rini. These riots destroyed a part of Chinatown. More than 1,000 Chinese residents were left homeless. The Pacific Casino Hotel was also totally gutted during this time. The commercial heart of Honiara was reduced to rubble and ashes. Another period of mass unrest occurred in 2021. During this time, the Parliament Building was attacked and Chinatown was looted.
Despite these challenges, Honiara remains the vital heart of the nation. It houses the National Parliament of Solomon Islands. Other important institutions include the Solomon Islands College of Higher Education. The city also contains the national museum and the Honiara Market. Politically, the city is divided into three parliamentary constituencies. These are East Honiara, Central Honiara, and West Honiara. These three areas are among only six in the country with over 10,000 voters. The population is quite young. Approximately 50% of residents are under the age of 30. As of 2021, the population was 92,344. By 2025, it is estimated to reach 116,581.
Religion also plays a major role in the life of the city. Honiara is a predominantly Christian community. Many different denominations have their headquarters located here. These include the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Honiara. The Church of the Province of Melanesia is also based in the city. Other groups include the United Church and the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
