Finding where the lance came from is a hard job for historians.
Today, there are at least four major relics that people claim are the lance.

The piece in Vienna is very special to look at. It has a beautiful gold cuff around it.
The Holy Lance is a significant religious relic. It is also known as the Spear of Longinus or the Spear of Destiny. Many traditions hold that this object is the lance used to pierce the side of Jesus during his crucifixion.
The biblical account of the lance appears in the Gospel of John. During the crucifixion, Roman soldiers planned to break the legs of those on the cross. This practice was called crurifragium, a method used to hasten death. The Gospel states that Jesus was already dead before the soldiers arrived to break his legs. To confirm his death, a Roman soldier stabbed him in the side with a lance.
Throughout history, many different pieces of the lance have appeared in various locations. These pieces are called relics.

The history of the lance's location is complex and full of movement. Early records from the 6th century place the lance in Jerusalem. The Breviary of Jerusalem, written around 530, describes it at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Other accounts suggest the lance was stolen from Rome by the Visigoths in 410. It may have been buried with Alaric in southern Italy. Later, the Sasanian general Shahrbaraz captured Jerusalem in 614. According to the Chronicon Paschale, the lance was taken then but eventually moved to Constantinople.
In the later Middle Ages, the relics became even more widely distributed. In 1239, the Latin Empire sold many relics to King Louis IX of France. This included a Holy Lance that arrived in Paris around 1242. These items were later placed in the Sainte Chapelle. However, the lance disappeared during the French Revolution. Meanwhile, other relics remained in Constantinople. In 1492, Sultan Bayezid II sent a lance to Pope Innocent VIII in Rome.
The most prominent relic today is located in Vienna, Austria. It is kept in the Imperial Treasury at the Hofburg Palace.
Modern historians study these relics to understand how religious traditions grow. There are at least four major sites claiming a connection to the lance. These sites include Rome, Vienna, Vagharshapat, and Antioch.
