Jumpers must take off on one foot. If you hit the bar, you fail. You can try many heights. If you miss three times, you are out.

People use different ways to jump. Long ago, some used a scissors style. They moved their legs one by one. Others used a belly-down style.

Now, most people use the Fosbury Flop.

You run in a curve. Then you leap head first. You go over the bar on your back.

This new way helps you jump very high. It is the best way to win. It is fun to watch!

People have used many ways to jump over the bar. Long ago, some used a scissors style. They moved their legs one by one. Later, many used the straddle technique. This meant they jumped with their belly facing down.

Today, most people use the Fosbury Flop. This style was made famous by Dick Fosbury. He won gold at the 1968 Olympics. In this style, the athlete runs in a curve. They leap head first. They go over the bar on their back. This helps them jump much higher.

In this sport, athletes try to leap over a horizontal bar. The bar sits between two tall stands. The goal is to clear the height without knocking the bar down. If a jumper hits the bar, the jump is a failure.

Most competitions say three misses in a row means you are out. The winner is the person who jumps the highest. It is one of two vertical clearance events in the Olympic program.

To jump well, athletes follow a specific way of moving.

Most modern jumpers use the Fosbury Flop. They start with a run of eight to ten steps. The first few steps are in a straight line to build speed. Then, the athlete runs on a curve toward the bar. They take off from just one foot. During the jump, they leap headfirst with their back to the bar. This helps their body move efficiently over the height.

People have changed how they jump for a long time. The first recorded jumps happened in Scotland during the 19th century. Early jumpers used a scissors technique. This meant they moved their legs one by one over the bar. Later, many used the straddle technique. In that style, the athlete rotated their body to go belly-down over the bar. American Charles Dumas was the first to clear 7 feet using the straddle in 1956.

Everything changed because of an innovator named Dick Fosbury.

He used a new style at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. He went over the bar on his back. This was possible because landing areas became softer and more cushioned. Before this, people landed in pits filled with sand or sawdust. After Fosbury won gold, his "flop" style became very popular. Soon, almost all top jumpers were using this new method.

Today, we can look at incredible records set by the best athletes. Javier Sotomayor from Cuba holds the men's world record. He set his amazing mark in 1993. This is the longest-standing record in men's high jump history. For the women, Yaroslava Mahuchikh from Ukraine holds the record. She set her new world record in 2024. These athletes show us how much humans can achieve through skill and practice.

High jump is a specialized track and field event focused on vertical clearance.

In this discipline, competitors must leap over a horizontal bar without dislodging it. The bar is held up by two standards, and a soft crash mat is placed for the landing. This sport is one of only two vertical clearance events in the Olympic athletics program. It is a major part of the World Championships in Athletics and various indoor meets. The event is a test of explosive power, coordination, and technical precision.

Success in the high jump requires following strict technical rules set by World Athletics.

Athletes must take off from only one foot to complete a legal jump. A jump is recorded as a failure if the athlete knocks the bar down. It is also a failure if they touch the ground or any object behind the bar before clearing it. Most competitions use an elimination format. If a jumper misses three consecutive attempts at any height, they are removed from the competition. The winner is the person who clears the greatest height during the final stage.

If athletes are tied, specific tie-breaking rules determine the winner. First, officials look for the jumper with the fewest misses at the height where the tie occurred. If they are still tied, they look at the fewest total misses throughout the entire competition. In some cases, a jump-off is used to decide the winner. This process begins at the next height above the last successful height. During a jump-off, athletes get only one attempt at each height. A 2009 rule change now makes the jump-off optional, allowing athletes to share first place by agreement.

The history of high jump shows a constant evolution of human technique.

The first recorded competitions took place in Scotland during the 19th century. Early athletes used a scissors technique, moving their legs one at a time over the bar. Michael Sweeney later developed the Eastern cut-off, which involved flattening the spine over the bar. By 1912, George Horine introduced the Western roll, where the inner leg is used for takeoff. For several decades, the straddle technique was the most efficient method. Straddle jumpers rotated their bodies belly-down around the bar to achieve higher clearances.

A massive shift occurred with the invention of the Fosbury Flop. Dick Fosbury, an American athlete, revolutionized the sport at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. He utilized the new, softer landing mats to leap headfirst with his back to the bar. This "J" shaped approach allowed him to convert horizontal momentum into vertical lift. While others like Debbie Brill developed similar styles, Fosbury's gold medal win made the technique universal. By the late 1980s, the straddle technique had almost entirely disappeared from elite international competition.

The mechanics of the Fosbury Flop are deeply rooted in physics.

An athlete begins with an eight- to ten-step approach. The first few steps are in a straight line to build momentum. The final steps occur on a curve, which creates centripetal force to help the athlete turn. Athletes must lean into this curve from their ankles to allow their hips to rotate. During takeoff, the jumper drives their non-takeoff knee upward while swinging one or both arms. This motion helps the athlete's center of gravity pass underneath the bar.

Today, the high jump features incredible world records that define the limits of human ability. Javier Sotomayor of Cuba holds the men's world record, set in 1993. This remains the longest-standing record in the history of men's high jump. In the women's category, Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine set the world record in 2024. These athletes continue to push the boundaries of what is possible through the mastery of the Fosbury Flop.
