Long ago, a man led Korea.

Long ago, a man named Yi led Korea.
He wanted to make his land strong. He fixed many old laws. He even rebuilt a grand palace.
He also wanted to keep people out. He did not want new trade. He wanted to keep his ways safe.
This was a very busy time. The world was changing fast. He tried to stop those changes.
He worked hard to lead his people.
Yi Ha-eung was a leader in Korea.
He wanted to make the government strong. He fought against corruption. He also rebuilt Gyeongbok Palace. This was a very big job. It took over seven years to finish.
Yi also had a plan for other lands. He wanted to keep Korea isolated. This means he kept the country closed to others. He did not want trade with Western nations. He did not want new ideas from them. He wanted to protect Korean ways.
This policy had many results. It helped keep old traditions safe. But it also made it hard to grow. Korea missed out on new tools and trade. This happened while the world was changing fast.
Later, Yi lost his power. King Gojong grew up and took over. Yi even had a short time back in power. He was a very important man in Korean history.
Heungseon Daewongun was a very important leader in Korea during the late Joseon dynasty.

His life changed when his son, Yi Myeong-bok, became king. In January 1864, King Cheoljong died without any children to take his place. A group of royal women helped choose the next leader. They chose the eleven-year-old Yi Myeong-bok to be King Gojong. Because the new king was so young, Yi Ha-eung became the regent. A regent is a person who rules for a king. The title Daewongun means "prince of the great court." He ruled the country from 1864 until 1873.
As a leader, the Daewongun wanted to make the government strong again. He wanted to fix many problems in the country. He led a campaign to stop corruption in the government. He also taxed the rich noblemen known as the yangban. One of his biggest projects was rebuilding Gyeongbok Palace. The palace had been destroyed by fires and wars long ago. It took seven years and five months to finish the work. This was a very expensive job for the nation.
The Daewongun also had a very strict plan for other countries. He wanted to keep Korea isolated from the rest of the world. This was called an isolation policy. He did not want trade with Western nations. He also did not want new religions or new ideas. He believed this would protect Korean traditions and culture. However, staying closed made it hard for Korea to modernize. It also meant there were fewer chances to trade with others. This made it difficult for an industrial revolution to start in Korea.
Later in his life, things became very complicated for the Daewongun. In 1874, King Gojong grew up and took over the ruling. This forced the Daewongun into a semi-retirement. He even had a short time back in power during a riot in 1882. During this time, he worked to remove the influence of Queen Min. He was a man who fought hard to keep the old ways of Korea alive. He died on February 22, 1898.
Heungseon Daewongun was a powerful political figure in late Joseon Korea.
His life changed when his son became the king. In January 1864, King Cheoljong died without an heir. Three royal women helped choose the next leader. Dowager Queen Sinjeong held the right to designate the successor. She chose eleven-year-old Yi Myeong-bok to be the new king. This boy became King Gojong. Because Gojong was so young, Yi Ha-eung became the regent. The title Daewongun means "prince of the great court." This title is given to the father of a reigning monarch. He acted as the de facto ruler from 1864 to 1873.
As a leader, the Daewongun wanted to restore the strength of the monarchy. He aimed to crush the old ruling factions. These groups had taken power away from the kings earlier in the century. He led an anti-corruption campaign to fix the government. He also disciplined royal clans and taxed the aristocracy, known as the yangban. One of his most famous projects was rebuilding Gyeongbok Palace. The palace had been destroyed by a fire in 1533 and a Japanese invasion in 1592. Rebuilding the palace took seven years and five months. This was one of the most expensive projects in the history of the Joseon dynasty.

This isolation had both good and bad results for the country. It helped protect Korean heritage from cultural imperialism. However, it also limited Korea's ability to trade with other nations. Because Korea was closed off, it was harder for an Industrial Revolution to happen. The Daewongun wanted to avoid the West to keep government influence strong. He also wanted to protect the social hierarchy. The wealth of the noble yangban depended on the labor of the sangmin farmers. Emancipating the sangmin would have destroyed the social class of the Daewongun himself.
In 1874, King Gojong became an adult. This change forced the Daewongun into semi-retirement. His political rival was Queen Min, who was Gojong's wife. The two leaders had very different ideas for Korea. The Daewongun had a brief return to power during the Imo Incident in 1882. During a riot, he helped end a melee and regained control of government matters. However, Chinese diplomats wanted him removed. They believed his actions invited Japanese troops into the country. Chinese soldiers eventually escorted him to a warship and took him to Tianjin.
