Talbot's first major photographic breakthrough was the salted paper process, also called photogenic drawing. To create these images, he prepared writing paper by bathing it in a weak solution of sodium chloride, or table salt. After the paper dried, he brushed one side with a strong solution of silver nitrate. This chemical reaction created a coating of silver chloride on the paper. This coating was extremely light-sensitive, meaning it would darken when exposed to light. This was known as a "printing out" process. The paper had to remain in the sunlight until the image reached the correct darkness. For camera images, this exposure could take one or two hours to produce a clear result.
Earlier experimenters had used silver salts before, but they could not stop the images from darkening completely. Talbot solved this by finding ways to chemically stabilize his results. He later improved this method to create the calotype process, which he sometimes called the "talbotype." 
The calotype offered a massive advantage over other early methods like the daguerreotype. 
Talbot was a prolific author and documenter of his own discoveries. Between 1844 and 1846, he published "The Pencil of Nature." 

In his later years, Talbot focused on photomechanical reproduction to solve the problem of fading. He wanted to turn photographic images into permanent ink on paper. He developed the photoglyphic engraving process, which was a precursor to photogravure. 
Talbot's career was also marked by significant legal and professional controversy. He held a patent for his calotype process, which he obtained in England in 1841. He charged different fees based on use, with professionals paying up to £300 annually. While some scientists supported his right to recoup his £5,000 investment, many others criticized him. They felt that patenting such discoveries hindered scientific progress. This tension grew when the wet collodion process was introduced in 1851. This new method used glass instead of paper, creating much sharper images. Talbot attempted to claim that this new process still required a calotype license, leading to legal battles and public criticism from leaders of the Royal Society and the Royal Academy.
