Building the metro was a big job. Workers had to dig deep tunnels into the rock. In one spot, they found a wedge of clay. They called this the Kluuvi bruise. To fix it, they used pipes to freeze the clay. They turned it into a giant freezer! Once the clay was frozen, they could safely blast it away. This helped them finish the tunnel. The stations can also act as bomb shelters.

Planning for this system took a very long time. People first talked about a tunnel system in 1955. A committee led by Reino Castrén looked at the idea. They thought the city would grow too fast for cars.

Their first plan was for a light rail system. It would have had many more stations. This plan was rejected because it was too big. Later, a new leader named Unto Valtanen took over. He changed the plan to a heavy rail system. This system uses deep tunnels mined into the bedrock.

Building the tunnels was a very hard job.

The tracks pass directly under the Helsinki Central Station. This design allows passengers to transfer to the commuter rail network. This connection includes the Ring Rail Line, which provides access to the Helsinki Airport.

The system has grown significantly through several expansion phases. Originally, it was a single line from Rautatientori to Itäkeskus. Later, a fork was added in the east to reach Mellunmäki and Vuosaari. A westward extension to Ruoholahti followed. The Länsimetro extension opened on November 18, 2017. This project moved the tracks through Lauttasaari and into the neighboring city of Espoo. It reached Tapiola and Matinkylä. The most recent major expansion reached Kivenlahti on December 3, 2022. These additions ensure the metro connects the eastern suburbs to the western suburbs and downtown Helsinki.

The history of the metro began with discussions in 1955. A suburban traffic committee led by Reino Castrén investigated the need for a tunneled system. They predicted that Helsinki's population would grow too fast for street-level traffic. They suggested moving public transport underground to free up streets for private cars. In 1963, the committee proposed a light rail system. This plan included many more stations at shorter intervals than the current system. However, the city council rejected this proposal because it was considered too extensive.

After the light rail plan failed, the approach to the project changed. In 1967, Unto Valtanen took over leadership of the committee. He determined that the metro should be a heavy rail system instead. This meant the tracks would be built in deep tunnels mined into the bedrock. This decision changed the entire technical nature of the project. The city council finally approved the proposal for an initial line in May 1969. Construction of the tunnels began in earnest in 1971.

Building the tunnels presented a major engineering challenge known as the Kluuvi bruise. This was a wedge of clay found within the bedrock during excavation. To solve this, engineers used an unusual method involving Freon 22. They pushed pipes filled with this substance through the clay to turn it into a giant freezer. Once the clay was frozen solid, workers could carefully blast it away. They then installed cast iron tubes to create a permanent, durable tunnel.
