The history of discovering Helicoprion is quite long and complex. The first known specimen was a partial tooth whorl containing 14 visible teeth. 
Many different scientists contributed to our knowledge of these fossils over the decades. Alexander Bessonov discovered more complete whorls in a Russian quarry near Krasnoufimsk. He sent these to Karpinsky, who described them in 1899. 
Helicoprion fossils provide great insight into ancient ocean life. These fossils are found in marine deposits all over the world. This tells us that Helicoprion was a pelagic animal, meaning it lived in the open ocean. 
Estimating the size and appearance of Helicoprion requires looking at related fossils. Scientists use the skeletal anatomy of smaller eugeneodonts to make these guesses. They estimate that Helicoprion could reach lengths between 2 and 3 meters.
