Halobates also play a vital role in the wider marine food web. They are a food source for various animals. Some species of storm petrel eat them, and some birds even splash the water to attract them. Other seabirds, such as noddies, and various surface-feeding fish also prey on them. Beyond biology, scientists are studying Halobates for materials science. The species Halobates sericeus has a cuticle, or outer layer, that reflects more than 99.9998 percent of UV radiation at the 280 nm wavelength. Researchers are still investigating the physical properties that allow for this incredible protection.
