Halifax is the capital of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. It is also the most populous municipality in Atlantic Canada. Today, the area is officially known as the Halifax Regional Municipality, or HRM.
The geography of the region is defined by its relationship with the sea. Halifax sits around a large harbour. The urban core is concentrated on the Halifax Peninsula and in Dartmouth.
Halifax has a deep history that began long before European arrival. The Mi'kmaq people lived in the area for generations. They called the harbour Chebookt, which means "Chief Harbour" or "Great Harbour."
The establishment of the town led to significant conflict. The British settlement violated treaties signed with the Mi'kmaq in 1726. This helped start Father Le Loutre's War. To protect the new Protestant settlements, the British built several fortifications. They built Citadel Hill in 1749 and Fort Sackville in Bedford that same year. Other forts were built in Dartmouth in 1750 and Lawrencetown in 1754. These structures were part of a larger effort to secure the region during a time of colonial tension.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Halifax became a major centre for trade and the military. The completion of the Intercolonial Railway in 1876 was a turning point. This railway made Halifax a vital gateway for Atlantic trade. It was especially important in the winter. During those months, ice often blocked ports on the St. Lawrence River. However, this busy maritime activity led to a major disaster. On December 6, 1917, two ships collided in "The Narrows" of the harbour. The collision caused the Halifax Explosion. This was the largest artificial explosion before the development of nuclear weapons. The blast destroyed the Richmond District and killed about 2,000 people.
Today, Halifax is a major economic hub for Atlantic Canada. It hosts many government offices and private companies. The Port of Halifax is a key driver of the economy.
The city is also a significant cultural centre. It has many museums, theatres, and art galleries.
