He led his people to new lands. He won many battles to grow his home. He even helped a neighbor land stay safe.
His land became a very big empire. He was a hero to his people. His son built a huge stone to tell his story. It is the largest stone like that in the world. People still tell stories of his great life.
Gwanggaeto the Great was a powerful king. He ruled the land of Goguryeo. He became king in 391. At that time, Goguryeo was not very strong.
Gwanggaeto changed his land. He wanted it to be a great empire. He used a new title. This title showed he was equal to Chinese rulers. He led many armies to new places. He won many battles in the north and south. He took control of many cities and villages.
In the year 400, he helped a neighbor land called Silla. He sent 50,000 soldiers to protect them. This helped bring the Korean lands closer together. He also fought groups in the west and the east. His rule was a golden age for his people.
Gwanggaeto died in 412. His son, Jangsu, became the next king. Jangsu built a very large stone monument. It is called the Gwanggaeto Stele. It tells the story of his father's life. Today, many people in Korea see him as a hero.
Gwanggaeto the Great was a famous king of Goguryeo. He ruled from the year 391 until 412.
When Gwanggaeto took the throne, he used a special title. He called himself Taewang, which means Supreme King. This title showed that Goguryeo was an empire equal to China.
His military campaigns reached many different places. In the south, he fought against the kingdom of Baekje. In 396, he used land and sea paths to capture their capital. This city was Wiryeseong, located in what is now Seoul.
To the north and west, Gwanggaeto was also very busy. He fought tribes like the Khitan and the Sushen people. He even won control of the Liaodong peninsula. This allowed him to take back the ancient land of Gojoseon.
Gwanggaeto died in 412 when he was 38 years old. His son, Jangsu, became the next king and ruled for 79 years.
Gwanggaeto the Great was the nineteenth monarch of the Goguryeo kingdom. He ruled from 391 to 412. His full posthumous name translates to "Broad Expander of Domain, Peacemaker, Supreme King." He also used the era name Yeongnak, which means "Eternal Rejoicing." This title was very important for his political status. By using an era name, he declared Goguryeo an empire. He claimed his kingdom was equal to the imperial dynasties in China. Under his leadership, Goguryeo entered a golden age. It became one of the most powerful empires in East Asia.
Before Gwanggaeto took power, Goguryeo faced many challenges. In 371, a rival kingdom called Baekje defeated Goguryeo. This conflict resulted in the death of King Gogukwon. Baekje became a dominant power in the region. To survive, Goguryeo had to rebuild its strength. King Sosurim, the successor to Gogukwon, focused on domestic reforms. He spread Buddhism through the social and political systems. He also instituted military reforms to prevent future defeats. These internal changes laid the essential groundwork for Gwanggaeto's future expansion.
Gwanggaeto's military campaigns moved in several directions. In the south, he targeted the kingdom of Baekje. In 392, he led 40,000 troops to capture 10 walled cities. He fought several battles against the Baekje monarch, Asin. In 396, Gwanggaeto launched a massive assault on Wiryeseong. This was the Baekje capital located in present-day Seoul. He used both land and sea routes to reach the city. After this victory, the Baekje king surrendered a prince and ten ministers. This campaign significantly weakened Baekje's political stability.

Gwanggaeto also expanded his territory to the north and west. In 395, he invaded the Khitan Baili clan on the Liao River. He destroyed 600 to 700 camps during this excursion. In 398, he conquered the Sushen people in the northeast. His western campaigns were also very successful. He fought the Xianbei people of the Later Yan empire. He successfully conquered the Liaodong peninsula during this time. This victory allowed him to regain the ancient domain of Gojoseon. Goguryeo maintained control of Liaodong for several centuries.
In the southeast, Gwanggaeto acted as a protector for the kingdom of Silla. In 400, Silla requested help against an invasion. The attackers included troops from Baekje, Gaya, and the Wa from the Japanese archipelago. Gwanggaeto dispatched 50,000 expeditionary troops to assist. His forces annihilated the enemy coalition. This victory turned Silla into a de facto protectorate of Goguryeo. This event helped achieve a loose unification of the Korean peninsula. It also caused the kingdom of Gaya to decline permanently.

The scale of Gwanggaeto's conquests was massive. Records show he conquered 64 walled cities and 1,400 villages. Archaeological evidence suggests his empire reached as far west as modern Mongolia. His reign marked the zenith of Korean history. This period saw the consolidation of a great Northeast Asian empire. Gwanggaeto died of an unknown illness in 412 at age 38. His son, Jangsu, succeeded him and ruled for 79 years. Jangsu's long reign is the longest in East Asian history.

To honor his father, Jangsu erected the Gwanggaeto Stele in 414. This monument is located in present-day Ji'an. It is currently the largest engraved stele in the entire world. The stone contains inscriptions about Gwanggaeto's many achievements. Today, Gwanggaeto is a symbol of Korean nationalism. His legacy continues in modern culture and technology. The Republic of Korea Navy operates Gwanggaeto the Great-class destroyers. He is also a character in many popular video games. His life remains a central part of Korean historical identity.
