At one site, kelp decreased by 36.2% between 1987 and 2015. Instead of kelp, a thin seaweed called turf is growing on the floor. This makes it harder for fish like cod to live. People are now using closed areas to help the ecosystem recover. They also grow things like oysters and clams in the water.

These basins are separated from each other by the isobath, which is a line showing equal depth. The Northeast Channel serves as the main way for water to move between the gulf and the Northwest Atlantic.

Biodiversity in the gulf is incredibly high. More than 3,000 species of marine animals and birds live here. This includes large species like haddock, Atlantic herring, and the Acadian redfish. The American lobster also grows to very large sizes in these waters. Much of this life depends on kelp forest habitats. Kelp is a type of large seaweed that grows in the coastal zones. Different species live at different depths. For example, Alaria esculenta is common at depths less than 5 meters. Saccharina species, like S. latissima, are found between 5 and 15 meters.

In deeper, rocky areas, Agarum clathratum is more common. The gulf also provides summer homes for the highly endangered North Atlantic right whale.

History shows how much the gulf has mattered to humans. Because it was close to Europe, it became an early destination for settlers. French settlers arrived at St. Croix Island in 1604. English settlers founded the Popham Colony in 1607 and the Plymouth Colony in 1620. The massive cod fisheries in the gulf were very important for global trade. At the Ammen Rock Site 1, kelp decreased by 36.2% between 1987 and 2015. In some southwestern areas, invasive turf now covers 50% to 60% of the ocean floor. This turf is a type of macroalgae that lacks a complex structure. It replaces the tall kelp that fish need for shelter. This change, along with past overfishing, has pushed fish stocks toward collapse.

To help the environment, people are taking new actions. Since the early 1990s, certain areas have been closed to specific activities. This helps prevent further damage to the ecosystem. While traditional fishing for large fish like cod has declined, other types of fishing have grown. People now harvest more lobsters and other invertebrates. There is also a rise in marine aquaculture. This means farming sea life in controlled ways. Common species grown this way include Atlantic salmon, oysters, clams, and mussels. These changes show how humans are trying to adapt to a changing ocean.
