The name refers to Guangxin, an outpost from the Han dynasty. The name Guangxin came from an order by Emperor Wu of Han to "widely bestow favors and sow trust." During the Song dynasty, the region was divided into two parts. These were Guǎngnán Dōnglù and Guǎngnán Xīlù. The names Guangdong and Guangxi are abbreviations of these older terms. "Dōng" specifically means "east."
Cultural influence from Guangdong has spread far beyond its borders. The outward movement of people has shared Cantonese, Hakka, and Teochew languages and traditions. 

Several historical figures and events are tied to the province. Sun Yat-sen, the founder of the Republic of China, was born here. 

Today, Guangdong remains a global leader in scientific research. As of 2025, two of its major cities rank in the world's top 20 for scientific research output.
