Many stars in this region are actually multiple star systems. Delta Gruis is an optical double consisting of two stars, Delta1 and Delta2. Delta1 is a yellow giant, while Delta2 is a red giant variable. Mu Gruis is another optical double made of two yellow giants. Pi Gruis is also a double system containing a semi-regular red giant. Some systems, like RZ Gruis, are cataclysmic variable stars. In this system, a white dwarf pulls material from a donor star. This material forms a bright accretion disc around the white dwarf. CE Gruis is a different type of system called a polar. In these systems, the stars are tidally locked and material streams directly onto the white dwarf.
Astronomers have discovered several planetary systems within the boundaries of Grus. Six different star systems in this constellation are thought to host planets. The red dwarf Gliese 832 is one of the closest stars to Earth with a planetary system. It is only 16.1 light-years away and has a Jupiter-like planet named Gliese 832 b. The star WASP-95 hosts a "hot Jupiter" planet. This planet is notable because it completes an orbit every two days. Other stars with planets include Tau1 Gruis, HD 215456, and HD 213240. These discoveries help scientists understand how planets form around different types of stars.
Deep-sky objects in Grus provide even more variety. One notable object is the planetary nebula IC 5148. It is also known as the Spare Tyre Nebula due to its shape. This nebula is about 3,000 light-years away and expands at 50 kilometers per second. Grus also contains the Grus Quartet. This is a group of four interacting galaxies: NGC 7552, NGC 7590, NGC 7599, and NGC 7582. The tidal forces from their interaction cause high starburst activity in some of these galaxies. Near the border of Grus lies the giant elliptical galaxy IC 1459. This galaxy features a fast counterrotating stellar core.
Grus also connects to broader cosmic mysteries and cultural histories. The constellation is part of the "Southern Birds" group along with Pavo, Phoenix, and Tucana. In the past, many of these stars were considered part of the constellation Piscis Austrinus. Different cultures viewed these stars in unique ways. For example, the Arrernte and Luritja people in Central Australia had specific claims to certain stars in this region. Perhaps most surprising is the star S5-HVS1. This star is traveling faster than any other star detected so far. It may have been propelled out of the Milky Way by the supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*.
