This sea acts as a vital connection between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. The water moves through a complex system of currents that drive global patterns. Along the western side, the cold East Greenland Current flows southward. This current is a key part of the Atlantic conveyor belt. On the eastern side, the warm Spitsbergen Current flows northward. This current is a branch of the Gulf Stream. Where these two currents meet, they create a counter-clockwise flow in the center of the sea. This mixing of cold, fresh water and warm, salty water is very important. It can influence the thermohaline circulation, which is the global system of deep-ocean currents.
The physical shape of the sea floor is also quite complex. The bottom of the Greenland Sea is a large depression. It is bounded by underwater ridges, such as the Mohns Ridge and the Knipovich Ridge. These ridges are part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge system. To the west, the sea floor rises quickly toward the Greenland coast. The depths vary greatly across the region. While much of the sea is shallower, the Fram Strait reaches much deeper. There, the water reaches the Molloy Deep, which is a very profound part of the ocean. Silts, gravel, and boulders cover the various shelves and ridges on the bottom.
Ice is a defining feature of the Greenland Sea's environment. 

The climate in the Greenland Sea is strictly Arctic. Temperatures are very low and change depending on the season and location. In the north, surface water temperatures are often 0°C or even lower. The summer season is quite short. In the north, there are only about 225 days when temperatures rise above 0°C. In the south, that number can be as high as 334 days. Frequent fogs, strong winds, and moving ice make navigation difficult. Because of these conditions, there is only a narrow window for commercial ships. The ice season typically starts in October and does not end until August.
Many different species rely on the Greenland Sea for survival. 
Human exploration of the Greenland Sea has grown over many centuries.
