He developed differential and integral calculus independently of Isaac Newton. While Newton also discovered calculus, Leibniz's notation is often favored today. His father, Friedrich Leibniz, was a Professor of Moral Philosophy. When Gottfried was seven, he gained access to his father's large personal library. This allowed him to study advanced philosophy and theology much earlier than most students. By age 12, he was proficient in Latin. He enrolled in the University of Leipzig at age 14. He earned his bachelor's degree in Philosophy in 1662 and a master's degree in 1664. He later earned a bachelor's degree in Law in 1665 and a Doctorate in Law in 1666 from the University of Altdorf.

Leibniz was also a pioneer in mechanical technology. He wanted to improve upon the calculator designed by Blaise Pascal. In 1685, he was the first to describe a pinwheel calculator. He invented the "Leibniz wheel" to allow for automatic multiplication and division.

This invention was later used in the arithmometer. The arithmometer was the first mechanical calculator to be mass-produced. This shows how his mathematical theories were applied to real-world machines.
