Other stories say it means "Inundated Land" or "Flooded Land." One version says it comes from Huidu Totolu, which means "Three Mountains." These might be Mount Malenggalila and Mount Tilongkabila. Another idea is that it comes from Pogulatalo, meaning a "Place of Waiting." Over time, these words changed into the name we use today.

Gorontalo has a very long history of people living there. Some records show a Kingdom of Suwawa existed in the 8th century.

The name Gorontalo has several possible origins rooted in local language. One theory is that it comes from the word Hulontalangi. This term can mean "Valley of the Noble." In this version, "Huluntu" means valley and "Langi" means noble. Another interpretation suggests it means "Inundated Land" or "Flooded Land." This comes from the syllables "Huntu," meaning mainland or piles of soil, and "Langi-Langi," meaning flooded. A third version links the name to Huidu Totolu, meaning "Three Mountains." This refers to ancient peaks like Mount Malenggalila and Mount Tilongkabila. Another possibility is that it derives from Pogulatalo, which means "Place of Waiting."

Human civilization has existed on the Gorontalo peninsula for about 1,300 years.

Historical records show the Kingdom of Suwawa existed as early as the 8th century AD. Archaeologists have found the tomb of King Moluadu and his family near the Bulawa River. The Oluhuta sites also contain prehistoric tombs. These sites provide evidence of very ancient civilizations. The city of Gorontalo is one of the oldest in Sulawesi. It may have been established around the 16th century. For centuries, it was a major center for education and commerce. It helped spread Islam to Eastern Indonesia.

During the pre-colonial era, Gorontalo was governed by customary law. Local kingdoms were united through a kinship bond called "Pohala'a." There were five distinct Pohala'a areas: Gorontalo, Limboto, Suwawa, Bolango, Boalemo, and Atinggola. The Pohala'a Gorontalo was the most prominent of these groups. Religion and local customs were fused together. This connection was described by the phrase "Adat bersendikan Syara' and Syara' bersendikan Kitabullah." This means custom is based on religious law, and religious law is based on the holy book. This cultural identity remains strong in the region today.

European interest in the area began in the 16th century due to the spice trade. The Dutch arrived in the early 17th century and eventually controlled the region.

The Dutch East India Company, or VOC, established a trading post here. Gorontalo was valuable because it provided rice, chocolate, and coconut. The mountains also contained gold mines in areas like Samalata and Marisa.

The Dutch ruled Gorontalo for almost three centuries. This period saw a transition from the VOC to the Dutch East Indies government.

During World War II, Japanese forces occupied Gorontalo. This ended the long period of Dutch colonial rule.

Nani Wartabone led a movement for independence. He declared the region sovereign on 23 January 1942. This movement inspired others across the Indonesian archipelago. However, the Japanese military strongly opposed this independence movement. They arrested and tortured many advocates, including Wartabone. He later became a National Hero of Indonesia.

After the war, the Dutch attempted to return to control the area. This led to conflict between Dutch forces and Indonesian Republicans. Gorontalo eventually became part of North Sulawesi in 1950.

Gorontalo became its own separate province on 5 December 2000. This happened as part of a government decentralization program. It also recognized cultural and religious differences with North Sulawesi. The population has grown steadily over the years. The 2010 Census recorded 1,040,164 people. By 2020, the population reached 1,171,681. Official estimates for mid-2023 placed the population at 1,213,180. The province is known by two nicknames. One is "Porch of Medina," referring to its Islamic history. The other is "Karawo Province," named after local embroidery. The government is currently working to improve infrastructure. They are building projects like the Randangan Dam and the Anggrek Power Plant.
