Gordyene was an ancient land in the mountains. 

For a long time, big empires fought over this land. The Armenian Empire once ruled the area.
In the 300s, the land was a place for battles. 
Gordyene was an important ancient region located in a mountainous area. 

Life in Gordyene was shaped by its rugged land and its people. The inhabitants were known as master-builders. They were also experts at making machines used for sieges. 
History shows that many different leaders tried to rule this land.
As time passed, the region changed hands many times. In the 3rd century, a Roman leader named Diocletian conquered the area again. He even formed a special army unit named after his Caesar, Constantine. Later, the land became a place where the Roman and Persian Empires fought. 
One of the most famous spots in Gordyene was a fort called Pinaca.

The history of the people living there is complex. In 401 BCE, a group called the Carduchoi lived in the mountains north of the Tigris.

Others have looked for links to the ancient Urartian language. Some researchers believe the people were indigenous to the area before Iranians arrived. There is also a debate about whether they were related to the Gutians. However, some historians argue a direct connection to the Gutians is unlikely.
