Fossil evidence helps us trace the history of the Gobioidei. The earliest known fossil is a genus called *Carlomonnius*. It was found at the Monte Bolca site in Italy. This fossil dates back to the Early Eocene epoch. Scientists previously thought it was an indeterminate gobioid. However, later studies identified it as a stem-member of the family Butidae. Other ancient evidence comes from the Cambay Formation in Gujarat, India. These fossils are isolated otoliths, which are small ear bones. Two specific fossil genera, *Gobiidarum nolfi* and *Gobiidarum vastani*, were recovered from this site.
