If the planet is real, its physical characteristics are quite large. It has a minimum mass of 6.98 Earth masses. Some earlier analyses suggested even higher values. Simulations of the Gliese 581 system suggest an upper mass limit of 13.8 Earth masses. The planet would orbit at 0.21847 AU from its star. This distance is about one-fifth of the distance between Earth and the Sun. 
Climate models provide fascinating details about the planet's potential environment. Gliese 581d receives about 30% of the light intensity that Earth receives from the Sun. This might make the planet too cold for liquid water. However, a greenhouse effect could change this. A greenhouse effect occurs when an atmosphere traps heat near a planet's surface. On Earth, greenhouse gases keep our mean temperature much warmer than it would be otherwise. If Gliese 581d has a thick enough atmosphere, it could support a liquid water cycle. Stéphane Udry even suggested it could be covered by a large and deep ocean.
There are several scientific complexities regarding its habitability. For example, researchers have studied whether the planet could have plate tectonics. Plate tectonics are the movements of large sections of a planet's crust. These movements help stabilize carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Some calculations suggest tidal heating might be too low to keep these processes active. This would depend on whether radiogenic heating is higher than expected. Additionally, the planet's mass suggests it might not be made only of rocky material. It may have formed as an icy planet further out and migrated closer to the star.
Humanity has shown great interest in this distant candidate. In 2009, the "Hello from Earth" project collected messages for the planet. People from 195 different countries contributed 25,880 messages. These were transmitted using a 70-meter radio telescope in Australia.
