A long time ago, a big rock hit Earth. 

How did the Moon form? Most scientists believe in a big idea. They call it the giant-impact hypothesis. 
About 4.5 billion years ago, Earth was very young. A planet named Theia hit the Earth. Theia was about the size of Mars. 
The crash was very strong. It was a direct hit. This impact threw lots of bits of rock into space. These bits were parts of both Earth and Theia.
Some of this debris stayed near Earth. These bits of rock stuck together. This set of steps made the Moon.
We have clues that this happened. Rocks from the Moon look like rocks from Earth. This suggests they have a common origin. Also, the Moon has very little iron. Scientists think Theia's heavy iron core sank into Earth. This left the Moon made of lighter rocks. The big crash also gave Earth and the Moon a lot of spin. This helps explain how they move today.
