This city has a very long and interesting history. Ghazi-ud-Din II founded the city in 1740. He was a wazir in the court of the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah. At first, he named the city "Ghaziuddinnagar" after himself. When the railways arrived in 1864, the name was shortened to Ghaziabad. During the Mughal period, the banks of the Hindon River were a popular picnic spot. The city also played a part in the Indian independence movement in 1857. It became its own separate district on 14 November 1976.

Moving around the city is easy because it is a major hub.

Many different kinds of things are made in Ghaziabad. It is the second largest industrial city in Uttar Pradesh. After India became independent in 1947, many new factories opened. This happened because many people and businesses moved there from Punjab. The city became famous for making oil engines. Later, steel and electronics industries also grew very large. Many famous companies, like Tata and Bharat Electronics, have worked here.

The city's geography is shaped by its relationship with the Hindon River. The river has historically been a central feature of the local landscape. During the Mughal period, the banks of the Hindon were a popular picnic spot for the royal family. The river was also a site of conflict during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Today, the river continues to divide the urban layout into its two primary sections. This division helps define the different zones of the city's development.

Ghaziabad has a rich history that began in 1740. It was founded by Ghazi-ud-Din II, who was a wazir in the Mughal court. He originally named the settlement "Ghaziuddinnagar" after himself. The name changed as technology transformed the region. When the railways arrived in 1864, the name was shortened to Ghaziabad for administrative ease. This period also saw the establishment of the Scientific Society. This was a major milestone for the educational movement led by Syed Ahmad Khan. The city grew from a small settlement into a critical transport hub.

Transportation is a core part of the city's identity and growth. Ghaziabad is a major rail junction for North India. The Ghaziabad Junction has been operating since 1864. This station is a key stop on the Delhi-Howrah line. It sees a daily footfall of approximately 50,000 passengers. The city is also connected to Delhi via the Delhi Metro.

The Blue, Red, and Pink lines all provide service to the area. Additionally, the Delhi-Meerut RRTS is a semi-high speed rail service. This new system began its priority section service in October 2023. For air travel, the Hindon Airport has been operational since 2019.

The economy of Ghaziabad is heavily driven by industry. It is the second largest industrial city in Uttar Pradesh, following Kanpur. While industry existed as early as 1940, it expanded rapidly after 1947. This growth happened because many people and businesses moved from the newly formed Pakistan. The city became a famous center for the oil engines industry. Later, steel manufacturing and electronics industries also emerged.

Major companies like Tata and Bharat Electronics have established a presence here. The city's rapid expansion led a survey to call it the second fastest-growing city in the world.

Managing such a large population requires complex government systems. The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation governs the city under the Uttar Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act of 1959. The corporation is divided into five specific zones: City, Kavi Nagar, Vijay Nagar, Mohan Nagar, and Vasundhara. These zones are further divided into 100 wards. Each ward elects a councillor to represent its interests.

The city's administration handles many departments, including public works, health, and water works. In 2022-23, the corporation reported a revenue of ₹665 crore.

As the city continues to grow, it is looking toward sustainable development. The Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency has plans for the city. Ghaziabad is expected to become the next solar city in the state after Ayodhya. The goal is to meet 10% of the city's electricity demand through solar power by 2027. This includes a plan to generate 6 GW of power from rooftop solar systems. This shift toward renewable energy is part of a broader effort to manage the city's expanding infrastructure and resource needs.
