Mancoba became a mentor who encouraged him to be an artist.
Sekoto lived in many different South African cities. He lived in Johannesburg and Cape Town. In 1942, he moved to District Six in Cape Town. In 1945, he moved to Eastwood in Pretoria. In 1940, the Johannesburg Art Gallery bought one of his pictures. This was the first painting by a black artist to enter a museum. In 1947, he moved to Paris, France. He lived in Paris as an exile for many years.
Today, his art connects many different cultures. His paintings are kept in famous museums all over the world. You can find them in the Pretoria Art Gallery and the South African National Gallery. They are also in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His work shows how art can tell stories about where people live. Even when he was far away, his art stayed connected to his home. He remains a very important figure in art history.
