Page worked very hard to learn her craft. She studied acting at the Goodman School of Drama in Chicago. Later, she studied in New York City with teachers named Uta Hagen and Lee Strasberg. To pay her way, she worked many odd jobs. She worked as a hat-check girl and a theater usher. She even worked as a factory laborer. These jobs helped her support herself while she practiced her acting.
Her career had some very difficult times. During a period called McCarthyism, Page was blacklisted in Hollywood. This happened because of her connection to her teacher, Uta Hagen. Because of the blacklist, she could not work in movies for eight years. Even so, she did not give up on her dream. She continued to act on Broadway and in theater groups. She stayed busy performing in plays even when movies were not an option.

Page earned many of the most prestigious awards in the entertainment industry. She won two consecutive Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama. These were for her roles in Summer and Smoke in 1961 and Sweet Bird of Youth in 1962. Most notably, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1985. This honor was for her performance in the film The Trip to Bountiful. Throughout her life, she received numerous other nominations for Academy, Emmy, Tony, and Golden Globe awards.
