Charpak’s scientific journey began in earnest after the war. He joined the École des Mines in Paris, a very prestigious engineering school. He graduated in 1948 as a Civil Engineer of Mines, which is equivalent to a Master's degree. In 1949, he became a pupil in the laboratory of Frédéric Joliot-Curie at the Collège de France. This was a significant time, as Joliot-Curie had recently directed the construction of France's first atomic pile. Charpak continued his studies and received his PhD in nuclear physics in 1954. His thesis focused on very-low-energy radiation caused by the disintegration of nuclei. 
In 1959, Charpak joined the staff at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, in Geneva. It was here that he made his most famous discovery. He invented the multiwire proportional chamber, a device used to detect subatomic particles. Before this invention, scientists relied on bubble chambers to see particles. The multiwire proportional chamber was a major improvement. It allowed for much better data processing than the older technology. This new tool was made public in 1968 and quickly replaced the bubble chambers in many labs. 
Charpak did not stop with just one invention. During the latter parts of the 1970s, he co-invented the scintillation drift chamber. He worked on this project alongside researchers named Nlolc and Policarpo. These devices are types of gaseous detectors. They work by sensing the movement of particles through gas. The multiwire proportional chamber uses a series of wires to track these particles. This technology allows scientists to map the paths of particles with great precision. These advancements provided the tools necessary for modern high-energy physics. 
Charpak's influence extended far beyond the physics laboratory. In 1980, he became a professor-in-residence at the ESPCI in Paris. He also held the Joliot-Curie Chair there starting in 1984. At ESPCI, he demonstrated how his particle detectors could be used in other fields. Most importantly, he showed they could improve health diagnostics in medicine. He helped found several start-up companies in the biolab arena. These included Molecular Engines Laboratories, Biospace Instruments, and SuperSonic Imagine. Through these companies, he helped bring high-tech physics into the world of biology. 
His many contributions earned him the highest honors in science. In 1989, he received the High Energy Particle Physics Prize from the European Physical Society. This was the very first edition of that prize. In 1992, Charpak was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. He was recognized for his invention and development of particle detectors, specifically the multiwire proportional chamber. He held affiliations with both CERN and ESPCI at the time. Notably, he was the last person to be awarded the Physics Nobel Prize as a single individual. In 1999, he also received the Golden Plate Award from the American Academy of Achievement. 
Throughout his life, Charpak remained a person of strong convictions. He was politically active and used his voice to support human rights. In 1972, he and Daniele Amati launched a petition against the Vietnam War. Later, he started the Juri Orlow Committee to protest the imprisonment of an activist in the former Soviet Union. He was elected to the French Academy of Sciences on May 20, 1985. Charpak passed away in Paris on September 29, 2010, at the age of 86. His legacy lives on through the detectors that continue to reveal the secrets of the microscopic world.
