Bizet worked very hard to master his craft. He studied piano with Antoine François Marmontel. He won a second prize for piano in 1851. He won the first prize the very next year. He also studied counterpoint and fugue with a teacher named Zimmerman. This led him to meet the famous composer Charles Gounod. Gounod became a big influence on his musical style. Bizet even wrote piano versions of Gounod's music. He was an outstanding pianist, though he rarely played in public. He preferred to spend his time creating new songs and orchestral works.

His career included many big prizes and travels. In 1857, he won the prestigious Prix de Rome. This prize gave him a grant for five years. He spent much of this time living in Italy.

He loved seeing the ancient temples and houses there. He even began sketching a symphony based on his Italian travels. This work became known as his Roma symphony. He finished it much later in 1868.

Life was often difficult for the young composer. Many Parisian opera theaters preferred older, classical music. They often ignored his new works and his orchestral pieces. Because of this, his career stalled for a while. He earned money by arranging music for other people.

His early operas, like Les pêcheurs de perles, were not instant hits. He struggled to find the success he wanted.

His most famous work is the opera Carmen. People were originally worried about its themes of betrayal. The opera premiered on 3 March 1875. Bizet believed the show was a failure. Sadly, he died of a heart attack only three months later. He never knew that Carmen would become a massive success. It is now one of the most popular operas ever performed. Today, his music is celebrated for its brilliance and originality.

Born in Paris on 25 October 1838, he possessed an extraordinary natural talent for music. His family background provided a rich musical foundation for his development. His father, Adolphe Bizet, was a singing teacher and composer. His mother, Aimée Delsarte, was an accomplished pianist who likely gave him his first lessons. Through his mother, Georges learned the basics of musical notation very early. He also developed a keen ear by listening to his father's singing classes. This allowed him to identify complex chordal structures and memorize difficult songs.

Bizet's musical education was marked by precocity and rapid achievement. He was admitted to the Conservatoire de Paris in 1848 at age nine. This was one year before the official minimum entry age of ten. The Conservatoire's Committee of Studies waived the age rule because of his skill.

During his studies, he won several important awards. He earned first prize in solfège within six months of entering. He also won the Conservatoire's first prize for piano in 1852. Under the teacher Antoine François Marmontel, his pianism developed into an outstanding level. While he was a gifted pianist, he rarely performed in public. He preferred to focus his energy on composing new music.

His time at the Conservatoire introduced him to several major musical figures. He studied counterpoint and fugue with Pierre-Joseph-Guillaume Zimmerman. Through these studies, he met the famous composer Charles Gounod. Gounod became a lasting influence on Bizet's musical style. Bizet even wrote four-hand piano versions of Gounod's works. He also befriended the young Camille Saint-Saëns, who was another student of Gounod. In 1856, Bizet competed in an opera competition organized by Jacques Offenbach. He won a prize of 1,200 francs jointly with Charles Lecocq. This success allowed him to attend musical parties where he met the legendary Gioachino Rossini. Bizet deeply admired Rossini, calling him the greatest composer of all.

In 1857, Bizet achieved a major milestone by winning the prestigious Prix de Rome. This award was granted after the Académie des Beaux-Arts overturned an initial decision. The prize provided him with a five-year financial grant for his studies. He spent much of this period living at the Villa Medici in Rome.

He described the 16th-century palace as "paradise." During his time in Italy, he traveled to places like Naples and Pompeii. He was fascinated by the ancient temples and houses in Pompeii. These experiences inspired him to sketch a symphony based on his travels. This work eventually became known as his Roma symphony, finished in 1868.

Despite his early triumphs, Bizet's professional life in Paris was often difficult. He returned to Paris after three years in Italy to find a challenging landscape. The main Parisian opera theatres preferred established classical works over new compositions. Consequently, his keyboard and orchestral works were largely ignored by the public. His career stalled, and he had to earn a living by arranging music for others. He attempted many theatrical projects during the 1860s, but many were abandoned. His early operas, such as *Les pêcheurs de perles* and *La jolie fille de Perth*, did not see immediate success.

Bizet's later years included service in the National Guard during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871. Following the war, he saw some success with an orchestral suite derived from the play *L'Arlésienne*. However, his final masterpiece, *Carmen*, faced significant delays during production. Producers feared that the opera's themes of betrayal and murder would offend the audience. The opera finally premiered on 3 March 1875. At the time, Bizet was convinced that the work was a failure. He died of a heart attack only three months after the premiere. He was unaware that *Carmen* would become one of the most popular operas in history.

After his death, Bizet's legacy faced a period of neglect. Most of his works, excluding *Carmen*, were not frequently performed for many years. His original manuscripts were often lost or given away. Many published versions of his music were revised or adapted by other people. He did not found a specific musical school or leave behind direct disciples. However, the 20th century brought a resurgence in the performance of his music. Modern commentators now recognize him as a composer of immense brilliance and originality. His premature death is viewed as a significant loss to the history of French musical theatre.
