George Bancroft was a very important American historian and leader.
Bancroft worked hard to help the United States grow. In 1837, President Martin Van Buren made him the Collector of Customs in Boston. Later, he served as the Secretary of the Navy.
He also spent time working as a diplomat in Europe. A diplomat is a person who represents their country to others. In 1846, he was sent to London to talk with the British government. He also served as a minister to Prussia and Germany later in his life.
As a writer, Bancroft wrote a huge series of books. These books are called History of the United States, from the Discovery of the American Continent. He began publishing this work in 1834. He believed that America was a place of progress and freedom. He thought that through hard work, people could make society better. His books are still known for being very detailed about early America. He wanted to show how the nation grew into a land of liberty.
Bancroft also cared deeply about justice and the people. During the Civil War, he wrote letters to President Abraham Lincoln. He used these letters to argue for the end of slavery.
George Bancroft was a prominent American historian, statesman, and Democratic politician.
Bancroft was born on October 3, 1800, in Worcester, Massachusetts. His father, Aaron Bancroft, was a distinguished Revolutionary War soldier and a clergyman.
After returning to the United States in 1822, Bancroft focused on literature and teaching. He worked as a Greek tutor at Harvard. However, he found the curriculum there too narrow. In 1823, he co-founded the Round Hill School in Northampton, Massachusetts. This school allowed him to contribute to many academic journals. Bancroft also engaged in state politics. In 1830, he was elected to the Massachusetts State Senate. Although he was supported by the Working Men's Party, he declined to take his seat. He later became the Collector of Customs for the Port of Boston in 1837.
Bancroft's most significant political achievement occurred during his time as Secretary of the Navy. He served in President James Polk's cabinet starting in 1845.
As a historian, Bancroft followed a specific philosophical approach. He was a Romantic who emphasized nationalist and republican values. He used four main themes to explain American development. These themes were providence, progress, patria, and pan-democracy. Providence meant that destiny depended on God rather than human will. Progress suggested that continuous reform could create a better society. Patria represented the spreading influence of American liberty. Pan-democracy meant the nation-state was the central focus of history.
Bancroft also used his influence to support important social changes. During the American Civil War, he communicated with President Abraham Lincoln. Although he was initially skeptical of Lincoln, he eventually supported the president's leadership. Bancroft used his correspondence to argue for the abolition of slavery.
In his later years, Bancroft returned to international diplomacy. In 1867, President Andrew Johnson appointed him as the U.S. minister to Prussia. This allowed him to return to Germany, where he lived in Berlin for seven years. His career spanned many different fields, from naval administration to international relations. While later scientific historians criticized his romantic style, many scholars still value his work. He helped shape how Americans understood their own origins and the importance of individual liberty.
