A répétiteur is a musician who coaches singers and plays the piano during rehearsals. He found this role provided better preparation than formal conducting classes. This work helped him understand the needs of singers and the structure of opera. In 1938, he had his first chance to conduct Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." This occurred at the Hungarian State Opera just as political tensions were rising. His early conducting style was described by some critics as very violent and intense.
