Mercury is a rocky planet. It has a huge center made of iron. This heavy center makes the planet very dense.

The surface has many big holes. These are called craters. They form when rocks hit the ground.

Most of the surface is covered in impact craters. These are holes made when space rocks hit the ground. One of the largest is the Caloris Basin.

This impact was so strong it sent shock waves around the planet. These waves hit the other side and made a bumpy area called "Weird Terrain."

Mercury also has smooth plains. These are flat areas made by lava. Long ago, hot melted rock flowed out of vents. This lava filled in large low spots. Some craters have strange pits on their floors. Scientists think these pits form when underground magma chambers collapse.

Mercury is a rocky world with a very busy history. Geologists study its surface, crust, and the inside of the planet. This study looks at how the planet was built and how it changes. Mercury has a huge, iron-rich core. This core makes up about 60% of the planet's volume. Because the core is so big, it takes up 75% of the planet's radius.

This heavy center might even help create a magnetic field. This field might be caused by molten layers of iron moving around the core.

The surface of Mercury is shaped by many different things. Most of the ground is covered in impact craters. These are holes made when rocks from space hit the planet. One of the biggest is the Caloris Basin.

This impact was so powerful that it sent shock waves around the whole planet. These waves hit the exact opposite side of the world. This created a bumpy area known as "Weird Terrain." Scientists also see smooth plains on the surface. These flat areas were likely made by lava flows from volcanoes.

Mercury's history is divided into five different eras. These eras are named pre-Tolstojan, Tolstojan, Calorian, Mansurian, and Kuiperian. The planet formed about 4.6 billion years ago. For a long time, asteroids and comets hit the planet very hard. This was called the Late Heavy Bombardment. It ended about 3.8 billion years ago. Later, the planet began to cool down and shrink. As it shrank, the surface cracked to form ridges and cliffs. These cracks show they happened after the big craters formed.

Learning about Mercury is a very hard job for scientists. The planet stays very close to the Sun. This makes it very hot and bright for spacecraft. It is also hard to see Mercury from Earth. The Sun's light makes it difficult to use telescopes.

Only three space probes have visited Mercury so far. Mariner 10 flew by the planet in 1974 and 1975. The MESSENGER spacecraft studied it from 2008 to 2015. It sent back over 291,000 images of the whole planet.

Many things on Mercury look like things on our own Moon. For example, Mercury has large, smooth plains. These look like the dark areas we see on the Moon. Mercury also has many craters, just like the Moon does. However, Mercury has much fewer boulders than the Moon. There are about thirty times fewer boulders on Mercury.
