People have many different ideas about Genghis Khan today.

Genghis Khan was the founder and first khan of the Mongol Empire.
Temüjin's early life was marked by sudden hardship. His father died when Temüjin was only eight years old. After this death, his family was abandoned by their tribe. They lived in a state of near-poverty. During this time, Temüjin had to secure his position within his family. He eventually formed alliances with two important steppe leaders. These leaders were named Jamukha and Toghrul. They worked together to rescue his wife, Börte, from raiders. However, his friendship with Jamukha eventually turned into open warfare. After many conflicts, Temüjin became the sole ruler of the Mongolian steppe.
In 1206, Temüjin was formally given the title "Genghis Khan." This title was used during a large assembly. He introduced major reforms to help his empire stay stable. He replaced the old tribal structures with a meritocracy. A meritocracy is a system where people earn power through their skills and hard work. This new system served the ruling family directly. He also worked to consolidate his power after stopping a coup attempt. These changes helped the Mongols function as a single, organized unit.
Genghis Khan led several major military campaigns to expand his territory. In 1209, he led a large raid into the Western Xia. The Western Xia agreed to Mongol terms the following year. He then began a four-year campaign against the Jin dynasty. In 1215, his forces captured the Jin capital, Zhongdu.
The scale of the Mongol conquests was immense.

Historians find it difficult to study Genghis Khan because of how his story was recorded. Many accounts come from different languages across Eurasia. The "Secret History of the Mongols" is one important source. It provides details about his adolescence and rise to power. However, some historians dispute its absolute accuracy. Other sources, like Persian chronicles, show different views of his actions. Some writers were eyewitnesses to the wars, while others were more sympathetic to the Mongols. This variety makes it hard to find a single, neutral truth.
Today, Genghis Khan is viewed in many different ways. He is a controversial figure in world history. To some, he was a generous and loyal leader to his followers. He even believed the deity Tengri had destined him for world domination. To others, such as in Russia and the Arab world, he is remembered as a tyrant.
