In 2004, Wilders made a very big decision. He left the VVD because they disagreed about Turkey. Turkey wanted to join the European Union at that time. Wilders decided to start his own group called the PVV. In the 2006 election, his party won 9 seats. By the 2010 election, the party grew to 24 seats. This made the PVV the third largest party in parliament. His party helped support the Rutte cabinet from 2010 to 2012.

Geert Wilders is a prominent Dutch politician who has led the Party for Freedom, known as the PVV, since its founding in 2006. He currently serves as the party's leader in the House of Representatives, which is the lower house of the Dutch parliament. Wilders is defined by his right-wing populism, a political style that often pits the interests of ordinary people against established elites. His political platform is built upon several core pillars, including anti-immigration stances, opposition to Islam, and Euroscepticism, which is the desire to limit the power of the European Union.

Because of these intense views, he is a highly controversial figure both within the Netherlands and on the international stage.

Wilders' political identity is closely linked to his specific policy goals. He has campaigned heavily against what he calls the "Islamisation of the Netherlands." This includes advocating for the end of immigration from Muslim-majority countries and proposing a ban on the construction of new mosques. He has even called for the banning of the Quran, comparing it to the book *Mein Kampf*. Additionally, his party seeks significant economic and structural changes. The PVV has called for a €16 billion tax reduction and supports building more nuclear power plants.

He also promotes a return to the guilder, the currency used in the Netherlands before the euro, and suggests a stricter approach to recreational drug use.

Before entering high-level politics, Wilders had a diverse early life and career. He was born on 6 September 1963, in Venlo, a city in the Limburg province. His mother, Maria Anne Ourding, was born in the Dutch East Indies, which is now known as Indonesia. After completing his secondary education, Wilders traveled to the Middle East to see the world. He spent a year volunteering at a moshav, which is a type of cooperative farm, in Tomer on the West Bank. This experience shaped his views on democracy and his sense of solidarity with Israel.

Upon returning to the Netherlands, he worked for various insurance and social security boards while studying law at the Open University.

Wilders began his formal political career with the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy, or the VVD. He joined the party in 1989 and worked as a staff member for their parliamentary group starting in 1990. During this time, he focused on the social security system and later moved into foreign policy roles. In 1997, he was elected to the municipal council of Utrecht, one of the largest cities in the country. However, a major disagreement regarding the European Union's decision to begin accession negotiations with Turkey caused a rift. In September 2004, Wilders left the VVD to establish his own political group, which eventually became the PVV.

The PVV has experienced several significant stages of growth and influence in Dutch politics. In the 2006 parliamentary elections, the party won its first 9 seats out of 150. By the 2010 elections, the party's influence grew significantly when it won 24 seats, making it the third-largest party in parliament. This growth allowed the PVV to act as a "confidence and supply" partner for the Rutte cabinet from 2010 to 2012. This means that while the PVV was not part of the official government, it provided the necessary support to keep the government functioning.

In the 2024–2025 period, the PVV became the largest party in the Schoof cabinet.

Wilders' career has also been marked by legal challenges and intense public scrutiny. In 2008, he released a short film titled *Fitna*, which featured his views on Islam and drew widespread international criticism. In 2014, he faced legal issues following a campaign event where he used provocative language regarding Moroccan citizens. On 4 September 2020, a Dutch court convicted Wilders for group insults related to these comments.

These controversies, combined with his political stance, have necessitated constant security. Since 2004, Wilders has been under continuous protection by armed police to ensure his safety.

The impact of Wilders and the PVV can be seen in how they have shifted the Dutch political landscape. His party's rise is often linked to the legacy of Pim Fortuyn, a politician whose death changed how immigration and identity were discussed in the Netherlands. By adopting many of Fortuyn's themes, Wilders helped move these topics from the edges of political discussion into the mainstream. His work connects to broader global trends of populism and the debate over the future of European integration.
