A component called a cam provided the necessary movement. This cam used spiral surfaces to create a reciprocating motion for the locks. As the gun rotated, the cam pushed the locks forward to load the cartridges. When the cam reached its highest point, a cocking ring freed the lock to fire the shot. After firing, the cam drew the lock back to eject the spent casing from the left side. This continuous cycle allowed for rapid, rhythmic fire.

Different versions of the Gatling gun used various ammunition and feeding systems. Early models utilized paper cartridges filled with black powder. Because self-contained brass cartridges were not yet common, these paper rounds were fed via gravity from a hopper or magazine.

Another option was the field cannon firing canister shot, which acted like a large shotgun. The Gatling gun was more reliable and easier to operate than these heavy artillery-style weapons. Understanding the Gatling gun helps explain the evolution of modern mechanical systems. It was not a truly automatic weapon because it required a person to turn a crank. The Maxim gun, patented in 1883, became the first true fully-automatic weapon by using recoil force to reload. However, the Gatling gun's use of rotating parts and synchronized mechanical cycles paved the way for future engineering. It demonstrated how complex, multi-step processes could be automated through a single driving motion.
