In 1806, the Philips and Lee factory in Salford used it. This was thought to be the first use of gas street lighting in the world.

In the United States, David Melville is credited with early gas lighting. He may have lit streets in Newport, Rhode Island, around 1805. Today, we do not use gas for everything. William Murdoch was a key figure in making gas lighting a practical reality. While working at the Soho Foundry in Birmingham, England, he experimented with coal gas. In 1792, he successfully lit his own house in Redruth, Cornwall. By 1802, he used gas to light the exterior of the Soho Foundry, which astonished the local people. 
As the technology matured, it spread rapidly across the globe. Samuel Clegg founded the Gas Light and Coke Company to exploit this potential. In 1804, Friedrich Winzer patented coal-gas lighting, and in 1820, Paris adopted gas street lighting. Some of the earliest street lighting occurred in 1806 at the Philips and Lee factory in Salford, Lancashire. In the United States, David Melville is credited with early street lighting in Newport, Rhode Island, around 1805 or 1806. 
The economic impact of gas lighting was significant, especially for industry. Because gas lights could provide steady illumination, factories could operate for 24 hours a day. This was particularly helpful in Great Britain during the winter when nights are longer. This increased production capabilities significantly.
