These moons work in a very interesting way. The three inner moons—Io, Europa, and Ganymede—share a special rhythm. This is called an orbital resonance. 
Astronomers discovered these moons using a telescope in 1610. Galileo Galilei saw them in either December 1609 or January 1610. He first thought they were fixed stars near Jupiter. By January 15, he realized they were orbiting the planet. This was a huge discovery for science. It proved that things could orbit something other than Earth. Before this, many people believed Earth was the center of everything. 
Many different names were suggested for these moons. Galileo first called them the Medician stars to honor the Medici family. Another man named Simon Marius also saw them around the same time. Marius suggested names based on characters from myths. These names eventually became the ones we use today. Johannes Kepler helped suggest these names in his book from 1614. Galileo even used numbers to name them. He called them I, II, III, and IV. These numbers count the moons starting from Jupiter and moving outward.
