A defining feature of all galeaspids was a large opening on the dorsal surface of the head shield. This opening was connected to the pharynx and the gill chamber.

This structure served two main purposes: olfaction, or smelling, and respiration. It acted as a common nostril and a primary water intake device. This mechanism is similar to the nasopharyngeal duct found in modern hagfishes. Some species were specialized for high-volume breathing. Members of the order Polybranchiaspidida could have as many as 45 gill openings.

Galeaspids showed great diversity in their physical forms. Some groups, known as hunanaspidiforms, had head shields that produced slender processes. These processes extended laterally and anteriorly from the sides of the head.

Other groups, called eugaleaspidiforms, possessed horseshoe-shaped head shields. The eugaleaspidiforms often had a slit-shaped dorsal opening. This shape made them look similar to a group called osteostracans.

In more primitive forms like the genus Hanyangaspis, the inhalent opening was broad and located at the very front of the head. In other species, the opening could be heart-shaped, oval, or rounded.

The fossil record shows a complex history of appearance and extinction. The oldest known genera, such as Hanyangaspis and Dayongaspis, appeared about 436 million years ago. During the transition between the Llandovery and Wenlock epochs, the eugaleaspids underwent a diversification event. While many eugaleaspids went extinct by the Ludlow Epoch, the family Eugaleaspididae remained long-lived. The last of these disappeared by the end of the Pragian Epoch in the Lower Devonian.

Research into galeaspid evolution helps scientists understand the history of vertebrates. Earlier studies suggested galeaspids were closely related to Osteostraci. This connection was based on similarities in the morphology of their braincases.

In 2022, a new discovery added to this understanding. Researchers described a species called Tujiaaspis vividus from the Silurian period of China. This species showed a precursor condition to the paired fins seen in later fish.

Taxonomy, or the science of naming and classifying organisms, places galeaspids into specific groups. If the basal families Hanyangaspididae and Xiushuiaspididae are set aside, the rest fall into two main groups. The first is the order Eugaleaspidiformes, which includes genera like Sinogaleaspis and Meishanaspis. The second is the supraorder Polybranchiaspidida. This large group includes the order Polybranchiaspidiformes and the order Huananaspidiformes. Some experts even suggest demoting Galeaspida to a subclass. They propose uniting them with Pituriaspida and Osteostraci into a single class called Monorhina.
