Currently, 32% of assessed species are threatened with extinction. In Sri Lanka, the situation is especially serious. There are 50 species of freshwater crabs in Sri Lanka. Only one of these is not endemic to the country. More than half of these Sri Lankan species are classified as critically endangered.
