He lived from 1746 to 1828 and worked as a painter and printmaker. Many historians describe him as the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns. This means his work bridged the gap between traditional styles and the new ways of seeing the world. His art captured the massive historical changes happening in Spain during his lifetime. Through his paintings and engravings, he expressed deep emotions and political truths. His influence helped shape the direction of art for the 19th and 20th centuries.

Goya's journey into art began with practical training and intense study. At age 14, he studied under José Luzán, where he spent four years copying prints. He later moved to Madrid to study with Anton Raphael Mengs, a painter for the Spanish royalty. Goya also traveled to Rome at his own expense to study classical art. In Rome, he may have completed mythological works like *Sacrifice to Vesta*.

He mastered several different techniques to express his ideas. He worked with oil on canvas for large paintings. He also used etching, a process of making prints using acid and metal plates. This medium allowed him to explore his imagination and his political beliefs in great detail.

Early in his career, Goya focused on decorative and royal commissions. He designed tapestry cartoons, which are large patterns used to create woven wall hangings.

Between 1777 and 1782, he created about 42 of these designs. Many of them decorated the stone walls of El Escorial and the Palacio Real del Pardo. These works were often in the Rococo style, which is a light and decorative artistic style. While these jobs were not high-paying, they helped him gain fame. He also worked on frescoes, which are paintings made directly on wet plaster walls. He used these skills to decorate the Basilica of the Pillar and other important buildings.

Goya eventually rose to the highest levels of the Spanish court. In 1786, he received a salary as a painter to King Charles III. By 1799, he reached the rank of *Primer Pintor de Cámara*, or Prime Court Painter. This was the highest position a Spanish court painter could hold. He painted many powerful people, including the Duke and Duchess of Osuna. He also painted the royal family in a famous work titled *Charles IV of Spain and His Family*. Some see this portrait as a satire, meaning it uses humor to criticize corruption. He even included himself in the painting, watching the viewer from the background.

A major turning point occurred in 1793 when Goya suffered a severe, undiagnosed illness. This illness left him completely deaf. This change deeply affected his perspective and his creative output. His work began to shift from bright, social subjects to darker and more pessimistic themes. He became interested in subjects like insanity, mental asylums, and fantastical creatures. He also used his art to comment on social and political corruption. His etchings, such as the *Caprichos* series, showed his growing concern for the state of society. This period marked his transition into a more personal and intense style of art.

The Peninsular War, which began in 1807 when Napoleon led French armies into Spain, also deeply impacted him. Goya stayed in Madrid during this violent conflict. He expressed the horrors of the war through his art rather than through public speeches.

His series *Disasters of War* contains powerful prints that show the reality of the fighting. He also created the famous paintings *The Second of May 1808* and *The Third of May 1808*. These works are significant because they move away from idealized battles to show the actual suffering of people. They serve as a stark record of the historical upheaval in his country.

In his final years, Goya lived in near isolation at his home, the Quinta del Sordo.

Between 1819 and 1823, he created the *Black Paintings*. These were oil paintings applied directly to the plaster walls of his house. They reflect a sense of disillusionment with the political developments in Spain. Eventually, Goya left Spain in 1824 to live in Bordeaux, France.
