Fortifications are generally divided into three distinct branches. Permanent fortifications are long-lasting structures built for lasting defense. Field fortifications are more temporary setups used during active military operations. There is also an intermediate branch known as semipermanent fortification. While many people use the terms fort or fortress, castles are considered distinct. A castle serves as a residence for a monarch or a noble while also commanding a specific defensive territory.

The way fortifications are built has changed based on the technology used by attackers. In the earliest days, humans used simple wood and earth to block entrances. Later, builders used stones piled on top of each other without mortar. In the Near East, builders developed casemate walls. A casemate wall is a double wall with transverse walls that create chambers in between.

These chambers could be used for residential purposes or for storage. During a siege, soldiers could fill these spaces with soil and rocks. This increased the resistance of the outer wall against battering rams. By the 9th century BC, these were often replaced by sturdier solid walls to counter more effective battering rams.

The settlement of Solnitsata in Bulgaria, dating to 4700 BC, featured very tall stone walls. In Scotland, the prehistoric Ness of Brodgar featured a massive stone wall known as the "Great Wall of Brodgar" around 3200 BC. In the Iron Age, Celtic tribes built large settlements called oppida. One such site, the Oppidum of Manching in Germany, covered 380 hectares. It protected between 5,000 and 10,000 people within walls that were 7.2 km long.

The Roman Empire was famous for its massive, mortar-bound stone walls. One of their most famous works is Hadrian's Wall, built across northern England starting in AD 122. They also built the Aurelian Walls in Rome and the Theodosian Walls in Constantinople. In India, fortifications have a long history, with many forts built by Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha Empire. These are often called "durg" in Sanskrit, meaning an "inaccessible place." India currently contains over 180 forts, with the state of Maharashtra alone housing more than 70.

The Celts used a technique to build their oppida, and in Heuneburg, Germany, builders used limestone foundations. These foundations supported mudbrick walls that reached heights of 6 meters when including a roofed walkway. In the Southern Levant, casemate walls reached their peak during Iron Age II, between the 10th and 6th centuries BC. These walls could surround an entire settlement or just protect specific parts. Some were freestanding, while others were integrated into the outer buildings of a settlement. Some were even filled with soil immediately to create high, stable walls quickly.

Modern warfare has fundamentally changed the role of large-scale fortifications.

Advances in military technology since World War I have made massive, permanent fortifications obsolete in most combat situations. While they were once essential for the survival of cities against invasion, modern weapons can often bypass or destroy them. Today, many of these structures remain as historical sites. They show us the evolution of human ingenuity in response to the changing nature of conflict and technology.
