Flores is a large island in the eastern part of Indonesia. It is the biggest island in the East Nusa Tenggara Province. You can find it east of Sumbawa and the Komodo Islands. To its west are the Solor Islands and the Alor Archipelago. Timor sits to the southeast of the island. To the south, across the Sumba Strait, is Sumba Island. Long ago, a very different kind of human lived here. They were called Homo floresiensis, or a small archaic human. These ancestors arrived on the island between 1.3 and 1 million years ago. Scientists have found remains of fifteen different individuals. Most experts believe they were a distinct species from modern humans. They likely became extinct about 50,000 years ago.

Many people live on the island today. Flores is the 10th most populous island in all of Indonesia. The population was about 1,878,875 in the 2020 Census. By mid-2024, the official estimate was 2,014,110 people. Large towns include Ende, Maumere, Ruteng, Larantuka, and Bajawa. The island is split into eight local government areas called regencies.

Unique animals call Flores their home. The Komodo dragon is found on Flores and nearby islands. These lizards have been there for at least 1.4 million years. There are also special rats on the island. One kind, the Flores giant rat, can weigh up to 2.5 kilograms. This makes it about the size of a rabbit.

The ground beneath Flores is very active. It sits near the Sunda Trench and the Flores back-arc thrust fault. This means the island has many earthquakes every year. Sometimes these movements cause tsunamis. In 1992, a huge earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale hit Maumere. This event caused many deaths in the area.

The island is home to many animals that exist nowhere else. The Komodo dragon is endemic to Flores and its surrounding islands. This means the species is naturally found only in this specific area. The geological activity of the region is very intense. Flores is located near the Sunda Trench and the Flores back-arc thrust. The Flores Thrust is a massive system about 450 kilometers long. It consists of a deep basal fault and many smaller thrust faults. This active tectonic setting causes many earthquakes every year. Since 1960, there have been more than 25 earthquakes with a magnitude of 6 or higher. These movements can sometimes trigger tsunamis.

In 1992, a very large earthquake struck the region. It measured 7.8 on the Richter scale. This event caused severe shaking and a tsunami near Maumere. The disaster resulted in 2,500 deaths in and around the area. This included people on islands off the north coast. The island's history also includes periods of foreign influence. Portuguese traders and missionaries arrived in the 16th century. Their presence still affects the language and religion of places like Sikka today.
