Most of this land was once under the sea. People used a plan called the Zuiderzee Works to reclaim it. They turned water into dry land. This made the world's largest artificial island. Parts of the land are even below sea level. Pumping stations help keep the water in the right place.

Many people live in Flevoland. About 445,000 people live there. Almere is the biggest city. Lelystad is the capital city. There are also towns like Dronten and Zeewolde.

The land is used in many ways. Many people work on farms. They grow food and flowers. You can also see many wind turbines. These make power from the wind. There is also a nature park called the Oostvaardersplassen. It has pools, swamps, and many plants and animals.

Flevoland is the newest province in the Netherlands. It was officially established in 1986. Before this, different areas were part of other provinces. Now, these areas sit together in the centre of the country. Most of this land was once part of a large sea called the Zuiderzee. Today, Flevoland sits where the freshwater IJsselmeer and Markermeer lakes are located. It is the smallest province in the Netherlands by land area.

Creating this land was a huge project called the Zuiderzee Works. In 1932, workers finished the Afsluitdijk to close off the sea. This turned the saltwater sea into fresh water. Later, in the 1950s and 1960s, people reclaimed more land. They created the Noordoostpolder first in 1942. This added the islands of Urk and Schokland to the land. Then, they reclaimed the Flevopolder in two main parts. The first part was finished in 1957, and the second in 1968. This process created the world's largest artificial island.

The history of this place goes back a very long time. Roman writers mentioned a large lake called Lacus Flevo. A geographer named Pomponius Mela wrote about it in 44 AD. Over many years, the sea level rose slowly. This caused different lakes to join together. Between the years 790 and 1250, Lake Flevo connected to the North Sea. This caused many old villages to be swallowed by the water. The name Almere comes from the old name for this lake. Modern cities like Lelystad were named after Cornelis Lely. He was the man who helped design the great water works.

Flevoland has many different towns and cities. Lelystad is the capital city of the province. Almere is the most populous city in the area. Almere grew to become the seventh largest city in the whole country. There are six municipalities in total. These include Almere, Dronten, Lelystad, Noordoostpolder, Urk, and Zeewolde. As of January 2023, about 445,000 people lived here. The province is the second least populous province in the Netherlands. Many people use the Flevolijn and Hanzelijn trains to travel. These rail lines connect the province to places like Amsterdam and Zwolle.

Life in Flevoland is very connected to the land and water. Much of the land is used for agriculture. Farmers grow many different types of food and flowers. You can also see many wind turbines making renewable energy. Some areas have large forests, like in the southeast. There is also a special nature park called the Oostvaardersplassen. It has shallow pools, swamps, and small islands. It was meant to be an industrial area at first. However, plants and animals moved in on their own. This turned the area into a very important nature park.

Flevoland is the newest and twelfth province of the Netherlands. It was officially established in 1986. This happened when the Noordoostpolder and the Flevopolder regions were merged. The province sits in the center of the country. Most of this land was once part of the Zuiderzee. This was a large inland sea. Today, the province is located where the IJsselmeer and Markermeer lakes are. It is the smallest province in the Netherlands by land area. However, it is a very important part of the country's geography.

The land was created through a massive engineering project called the Zuiderzee Works. This process began after a major flood in 1916. Engineers decided to enclose the Zuiderzee to reclaim land. In 1932, they completed the Afsluitdijk. This dam closed off the sea completely. It turned the saltwater Zuiderzee into the freshwater IJsselmeer. Later, in the 1950s and 1960s, more land was reclaimed. This work split the Markermeer and bordering lakes from the IJsselmeer. These reclaimed areas are known as polders. A polder is a piece of low-lying land reclaimed from the sea.

Flevoland is made of several distinct polders. The Noordoostpolder was the first to be reclaimed in 1942. This area included the former islands of Urk and Schokland. It was originally part of the province of Overijssel. Next, the Flevopolder was reclaimed in two stages. The northeastern half was finished in 1957. The southwestern half was completed in 1968. Together, the Eastern and Southern Flevoland polders form the world's largest artificial island. They are connected by a dividing dike called the Knardijk. This dike keeps one polder safe if the other floods. Two main drainage canals run through this dike. They can be closed with floodgates during emergencies.

The history of this region reaches back to Roman times. A geographer named Pomponius Mela wrote about a large lake called Lacus Flevo in 44 AD. Over many centuries, the sea level rose slowly. This caused various lakes in the region to connect. Between the years 790 and 1250, Lake Flevo connected to the North Sea. This change caused several villages to be swallowed by the water. A new inland sea called Almere formed during this time. Modern names still reflect this history. The city of Almere is named after this medieval lake. The city of Lelystad was named after Cornelis Lely. He was the designer of the Zuiderzee Works.

Managing the water level is vital for the province. Pumping stations are used to move water and stabilize the land. There are several stations, such as the diesel-powered Wortman and De Blocq van Kuffeler. Other stations, like Lovink and Colijn, use electricity. In the Flevopolder, a narrow body of water is kept three meters below sea level. This helps stabilize the water table. It also prevents coastal towns from losing their access to the sea. These systems allow people to live safely on land that was once underwater.

Flevoland has a diverse landscape and economy. Much of the land is used for agriculture. Farmers cultivate many different crops and flowers. The province also uses many wind turbines for renewable energy. Tourism is another important source of income. There are also unique natural areas like the Oostvaardersplassen. This area consists of shallow pools, islets, and swamps. It was originally intended to be an industrial zone. However, plants and animals settled there spontaneously. This turned the area into a significant nature park. In the southeast, the landscape is dominated by extensive forests.

The province is home to about 445,000 people as of January 2023. It consists of six municipalities: Almere, Dronten, Lelystad, Noordoostpolder, Urk, and Zeewolde. Almere is the most populous city. It is the seventh largest city in the Netherlands. Lelystad is the provincial capital. The province is connected by major rail lines. The Flevolijn and Hanzelijn run through the area. These trains connect residents to cities like Amsterdam and Zwolle. Flevoland shows how humans can carefully reshape the Earth's surface.
