Conflict started when a raiding party went into Shona land. The company officials said the Ndebele must leave. The Ndebele did not leave. This led to a large fight. The company's guns were too strong for the Ndebele warriors. Many Ndebele people were killed in the battles.

The First Matabele War was a conflict fought between 1893 and 1894. It took place in a region known as Matabeleland. This area is part of the country we call Zimbabwe today.

The war was fought between the Ndebele Kingdom and the British South Africa Company. The Ndebele were led by King Lobengula. He was a leader who wanted to keep peace. He knew that European weapons were very destructive. He did not want his warriors to face them in a large battle.

Things became difficult when a local chief refused to pay tribute to the King. This chief said he was under the protection of the settlers. To show his power, Lobengula sent a raiding party to the area. This group of warriors caused trouble for the local people. The British South Africa Company officials demanded that the raiders leave. The Ndebele refused to go away. This led to a small fight that eventually turned into a full war.

In October 1893, the company sent troops to find the King's capital. This city was named Bulawayo. One group of about 700 men was led by Major Patrick Forbes. They carried five Maxim guns with them. These were new machines that could fire many bullets very quickly. Another force of 700 people came from the south to help. The Ndebele army was very large and well-trained. They had many spearmen and some riflemen. However, the Maxim guns changed how the battles went. They were much more powerful than the traditional weapons of the warriors.

During the fighting, the Ndebele suffered many losses. At the Shangani River, about 1,500 warriors were killed. At a place called Bembesi, 2,500 more were killed. The company forces lost very few people in comparison. Because of the fighting, King Lobengula had to leave Bulawayo. As he left, the royal town was burned. This destroyed many treasures like gold and ivory. An ammunition magazine also exploded during the fires. The company then moved into the ruins to build a new city.

After the war, the land changed a lot. The territory was named Rhodesia in 1895. This name came from Cecil Rhodes, a leader of the company. Many new people moved to the area to look for gold. They built new towns and even started building railways. One railway reached Bulawayo in 1897. The war had ended the rule of the Ndebele Kingdom. It marked the beginning of a new time for the people in that land.

The First Matabele War was a significant conflict fought between 1893 and 1894. It took place in the region of Matabeleland, which is located in modern-day Zimbabwe.

The war was fought between the Ndebele Kingdom and the British South Africa Company. The Ndebele were led by King Lobengula. The company was led by figures like Cecil Rhodes and Leander Starr Jameson. This war changed the political landscape of Southern Africa forever.

The conflict began due to tensions over land and authority. In 1889, Queen Victoria signed a royal charter for the British South Africa Company. This document allowed the company to administer territory from the Limpopo River to the Zambezi River. Cecil Rhodes used this charter to send a group called the Pioneer Column into the area. They established Fort Salisbury, which is now known as Harare. While Lobengula tried to avoid war, a dispute over tribute led to violence. A chief named Gomara refused to pay tribute to the King, claiming settler protection. Lobengula sent a raiding party to enforce his rule, which caused a clash with company officials.

The military forces involved were very different in size and technology. Lobengula could muster a massive force of 80,000 spearmen. He also had 20,000 riflemen armed with Martini-Henry rifles. Despite these numbers, the Ndebele faced a much smaller but more technologically advanced opponent. The British South Africa Company Police had only about 750 troops. They were joined by 700 Tswana allies. The most decisive factor was the use of the Maxim gun. This was a machine gun that could fire many bullets very quickly.

The war featured several intense battles that demonstrated the power of new weaponry. In October 1893, Major Patrick Forbes led a column of 700 men toward Bulawayo, the Ndebele capital. Near the Shangani River, 3,500 Ndebele warriors attacked the column. The Maxim guns proved devastating, causing about 1,500 Ndebele fatalities while the company lost only four men. A week later, at Bembesi, another 2,500 Ndebele warriors were killed during an attack. These battles showed that the Ndebele's traditional massed ranks could not withstand the rapid fire of the machine guns.

The destruction of Bulawayo marked a turning point in the war. As King Lobengula fled the capital, he and his subjects burned the royal town. This was done to prevent the company from capturing their treasures. The fires destroyed large stores of gold and ivory. An ammunition magazine also exploded during the conflagration.

When the British arrived, they began rebuilding a new city on the ruins of the old one. This new settlement was run by the company and became a base for their control.

One of the most famous episodes was the Shangani Patrol. In December 1893, Major Allan Wilson led 34 troopers to pursue the retreating King. They were caught by Ndebele forces after the Shangani River rose during the night. All 34 men of the patrol died in the encounter. Only three men survived to return and ask for reinforcements. Shortly after this, King Lobengula died from smallpox in early 1894. Without their leader, the Ndebele chiefs eventually submitted to the British South Africa Company.

The aftermath of the war saw massive changes to the region. In 1895, the territory was officially named Rhodesia after Cecil Rhodes. The area became a place for intense resource exploitation. Thousands of prospectors moved to the goldfields, and the population of Bulawayo grew rapidly. Railways were built to connect the region, with one reaching Bulawayo in 1897.
